  • India Swine Flu (H1N1) 2012 update: 405 fatalities

24th March: According to the latest reports the national death toll due to swine flu has gone up to 14. On Friday officials in Mumbai confirmed that a six year old boy and his grandmother tested positive for the virus. They hadn?t travelled to Pune recently and hence couldn?t contracted the virus from there. Pune has reported over 100 swine flu cases and 8 deaths. The disease has also hit the states of Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, Goa and Karnataka. Click here to find out how to keep the disease away.

The H1N1 menace has cast an ugly pall on the entire nation with 129 cases and 12 deaths reported in the last 20 days. Four states have been hit by H1N1 virus. Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka have reported a combined 129 cases out of which 69 are from Maharashtra alone. People will hope there is no repeat of the 2009 situation. According to Wikipedia there were 1410 deaths and 19,947 infected back then. Since then H1N1 cases have been on the decline not just in India but all over the world.

The government doesn?t feel there is any reason to panic and has asked these states to strengthen their surveillance system to check any further spread. ?The Health Ministry is monitoring the situation and there is no cause for worry. The states where cases had been reported have been advised to step up surveillance to control the further spread of the virus,? Health Secretary PK Pradhan said.

As per data released by the Health Ministry today, in the first 21 days of March, a total of 129 positive Influenza-H1N1 cases have been reported, with a total of 12 deaths. Of these, 69 cases are from Maharashtra, 27 from Andhra Pradesh, 28 from Rajasthan and five from Karnataka.

The Emergency Medical Relief Division of Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare is following the developments in the states of Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka for H1N1 cases. Swine flu tests are available at all government facilities and the medicine Tamiflu is available indigenously on prescription

Fresh outbreak of H1NI, 21 deaths in 3 months

New Delhi: Fresh outbreaks of dreaded H1N1 virus have surfaced in Maharashtra, Rajasthan and some other states claiming at least 21 lives in the last three months.

At least 309 cases have been reported in five states including Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Gujarat, according to the latest Health ministry figures.

While states reporting fresh cases of H1N1 influenza virus (also known as Swineflu) have been asked to step up surveillance by Union Health Ministry to check further spread of the virus, the Government said there was no cause for panic or alarm.

Of the total 21 deaths in 2012 so far, Maharashtra has reported nine deaths, followed by seven in Rajasthan and five in Andhra Pradesh. No death has taken place in Karnataka and Gujarat, which have also reported cases of H1N1 virus this year.

"The Health Ministry is monitoring the situation. There is no cause for worry. States where cases had been reported have been advised to step up surveillance to control further spread of the virus," Health Secretary PK Pradhan told PTI.

Re: India Swine Flu (H1N1) update: 21 dead, over 300 cases

            Time for a Summary of 2012 to date;

Maharashtra has reported 234 cases and 9 fatalities. While new cases continue to be reported, fatality numbers appear, at this time, to be low.
Rajasthan has reported 71 cases and 8 fatalities. % positive in March was around 25%.
Andhra Pradesh has seen 55 cases and 4 fatalities with case numbers increasing as March progressed.
Karnataka has reported 14 cases and 2 fatalities but emphasized that cases were sporadic.
Madhya Pradesh is reporting one confirmed and one suspected H1N1 death, the first in a year.
Tamil Nadu has reported the first 2 cases in Chennai in 18 months.

Totaling 377 confirmed cases and 24 fatalities nationally

Additionally unidentified ILI outbreaks have been reported in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, New Delhi, including influenza in the Chief Minister, and most recently Nashik, Maharashtra.

The weather conditions in the affected states seem to be generally in the 90s by day, 70s by night, dry and sunny.

This wave does not appear to be of epidemic proportions at this stage, but bears watching as India progresses toward the monsoon season.

Re: India Swine Flu (H1N1) update: 24 dead, over 300 cases

              Weekly Summary.

Maharashtra reported an additional 134 cases and 5 fatalities this week (to April 5th) bringing the total to 368 cases and 14 fatalities this year. While Pune district remains the most affected, cases have been reported from Nagpur, Mumbai and Nashik with two fatalities reported in the latter city.

Rajasthan recorded an additional 16 cases and 2 fatalities bringing totals to 87 and 10. 21% of tests were coming back positive for H1N1 in the past week.

Andhra Pradesh reported an additional 28 cases and 8 fatalities bringing the totals to 83 and 12 respectively. The most recent fatalities were reported from private hospitals. Cases and fatalities from private hospitals are often omitted from official government tallies.

Karnataka officially reported 57 new cases and one fatality on the week. However, it emerged that these reports included Bangalore residents only and residents from the rest of the state were not being counted. Various officials have alluded to an additional 2 to 5 fatalities. I'm tallying this as 71 cases and 5 fatalities pending further information.

In Madhya Pradesh the majority of tests being analysed are coming back negative, and the toll remains at one confirmed fatality.

Tamil Nadu reported 27 cases and 1 fatality in the week bringing the total numbers to 29 and 1 respectively.

Himachal Pradesh reported its first fatal case from Shimla.

              Gujarat has reported 3 cases.

There are currently 3 patients hospitalized in Chandigarh one from Haryana, one from Uttar Pradesh and a third from a village outside Chandigarh.

On the week, it appears that the outbreak is spreading to more states and more districts within states. A total of 269 new cases and 20 fatalities were reported. One would expect that confirmed cases are a fraction of actual cases.

The current national total (based on incomplete data) is 646 cases and 44 fatalities in 2012 with the majority occurring since the beginning of March.

Re: India Swine Flu (H1N1) update: 44 dead, over 600 cases

Ministry of Health and Family Welfare 12-April, 2012 19:35 IST
Committee of Secretaries Reviews State of Preparedness to Contain H1N1
The Cabinet Secretary Shri Ajit Kumar Seth today chaired a Committee of Secretaries meeting to review the state of preparedness to contain the incidence of H1N1 virus. Secretaries from Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Biotechnology, Pharmaceuticals were among those who attended the meeting.

The Cabinet secretary was apprised that a central team was deputed to Pune on April 8, 2012 to investigate the outbreak of Influenza A H1N1 and their preliminary report shows that the cases and deaths reported from Pune and Pimpri-Chinchiwad are sporadic in nature. A central stockpile of Oseltamivir tablets (anti viral drug) is being maintained and D/o Pharmaceuticals is monitoring availability of raw ingredient for making the drug. There is adequate stock of drugs and vaccines for treatment of people affected by the illness and immunization of health care personnel and whosoever may require it. Vaccine manufactured by indigenous manufacturers is also available.

The medical response system has been put on a state of preparedness. Forty five laboratories are testing samples (26 in Government sector and 19 in Private Sector). The test is done free of cost in Government laboratories/Integrated Disease Surveillance Project supported private laboratories (KMC, Manipal and CMC, Vellore). A nationwide network of laboratories in the private sector are also available for rapid diagnosis.

It was also stated that at the time of the early warning of the cases in Pune itself, an advisory was sent to all the States/UTs about the possibility of sporadic outbreaks of H1N1 influenza. Owing to reports circulating in the media regarding mutation in the virus, expert opinion was sought from the Director, National Institute of Virology, Pune who has stated that there is no mutation to suggest change of virus to ?dangerous form? and that the present strain of H1N1 pandemic virus are susceptible to Oseltamivir and the currently available vaccine can be used for protection against the virus. In the first week of March almost 30% of referred samples were positive for H1N1 in Pune which has now come down to approximately 10%.

During the period from March 1, 2012 to April 9, 2012, 689 cases of H1N1 have been reported from Maharashtra (392 cases), Karnataka (104), Andhra Pradesh (66), Rajasthan (84), Tamil Nadu (28), Delhi (6), Gujarat (5) and in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh (one each). During the same period, 35 deaths have been reported, of which 15 were from Maharashtra, nine from Rajasthan, six from Andhra Pradesh, two from Gujarat and one each from Tamil Nadu, Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

M/o Health & Family Welfare has been asked to monitor the situation on a day to day basis and take all possible steps to ensure that the drug and vaccine are available in sufficient stock.

Re: India Swine Flu (H1N1) update: 44 dead, over 600 cases

                  Weekly Summary.

After the initial media storm, reporting on the current H1N1 outbreak has largely subsided. Unfortunately, as the majority of states do not provide any web-based epidemiological reports, this makes information very hard to find. Reports emerging this week of Hospitals failing to report cases and fatalities (Karnataka and Tamil Nadu) and cities passing the buck on fatalities (Mumbai, Bangalore) suggest that any count even of confirmed fatalities is largely incomplete. It should also be remembered that estimates of actual flu fatalities in India historically exceed the numbers of confirmed fatalities by 100 or more to 1.

Maharashtra has not updated its daily report page since April 7th, so an accurate case count is impossible. There have been 4 media reported fatalities and one reported suspected fatal case bringing the 2012 total to 19 confirmed and 1 unconfirmed. The ages and genders of the fatalities are; 29F, 17M, 23F, 45M, 28M. In the case of the 45 yo male, he tested positive for H1N1, was admitted to hospital, treated with Tamiflu, transferred to a cardiac unit, a retest came back negative. The man later died officially from cardiac arrest.

Rajasthan is the only state currently providing consistent daily information. 32 new cases and 4 fatalities were reported this week bringing the totals to 119 and 14 respectively. Interestingly, only one of these fatalities was media reported, a 52yo woman. The report described her as the first death in Rajasthan this season. Test results this week were 23% positive for H1N1.

One fatality, a 23 yo pregnant woman, was reported from Andhra Pradesh this week bringing the total to 13.

Karnataka reported 67 new cases doubling the total to 138 and three new fatalities this week. All three fatalities were female aged 30, 45 and "middle aged". 118 of the 138 cases are from Bangalore suggesting little or no testing going on outside the city. The total number of fatalities remains unclear but is perhaps 8. In one instance this week, a fatality announced by the health department was denied by the hospital involved.

No new reports from Madhya Pradesh this week. The official total remains at 1 case and 1 fatality.

11 new cases were reported from Tamil Nadu including 3 members of a family in Chennai. No fatalities, and the totals stand at 39 cases and 1 fatality. Tamil Nadu set up screening centers at the airport and train stations this week. These are not mandatory for travellers. It appears that they are simply places where someone with ILI can get a free checkup.

No new reports from Himachal Pradesh. The official count remains at 1 case and 1 fatality.

Gujarat reported 3 new cases, bringing the total to 6, and its first fatalities all middle aged men - 52,57 and 65 years old. The total number of cases reported this year is 6, three of whom have died.

No new reports from Chandigarh beyond the three cases reported earlier.

Puducherry reported its first four cases this week. Some were Tamil Nadu residents, at least one was transferred to a Tamil Nadu hospital.

Delhi reported 6 cases in 2012 this week. It was stressed that they were not recent cases and that all had been cured.

In all, 15 new fatalities and a suspected one, bringing the total number of confirmed fatalities in 2012 to 59.

Re: India Swine Flu (H1N1) update: 69 fatalities

It's tough to count given that the Provinces are using different start dates for counting the number of fatalities. For example, Maharashtra report 26 deaths since 4/1/2011, some report deaths in 2012 only, and some might be (cannot confirm) reporting since Week 40 of 2011.

Using last April as the start date for all Provinces, I currently have a total of 109, of which 34 are from 2011. Here are my totals:

                          Andhra Pradesh - 13
                          Gujarat - 3
                          Himachal Pradesh - 1
                          Karnataka - 20 (12 from 2011)
                          Kerala - 9 (9 from 2011)
                          Madhya Pradesh - 2 (1 from 2011)
                          Maharashtra - 26 (since 41/1/11)
                          Punjab - 3
                          Rajasthan - 27 (12 from 2011)
                          Tamil Nadu - 4
                          Uttarakhand - 1

                            Hi Jim - I was counting 2012 only;

                            Maharashtra 23
                            Rajasthan 15
                            Andhra Pradesh 13
                            Karnataka 8
                            Tamil Nadu 4
                            Gujarat 3
                            Himachal Pradesh 2
Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand 1 each. So 71 in 2012, not 69 as I stated earlier. (I must've forgotten HP)
