Erratic weather behind suspected H1N1 cases in Mumbai
Following reports of swine flu cases coming in from Pune and northern parts of the country, city doctors too are witnessing a few suspected cases. While they await reports, city doctors say the H1N1 strain is showing some variations, even as they suspect the fluctuating temperature as the primary cause for the flu?s recurrence.
Stating that the unusually cold weather could be the reason for the cases, infectious disease expert at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani hospital Dr Tanu Singhnal said, ?The few suspected swine-flu cases we received are being treated symptomatically.?
There are other city hospitals though that have been sending swabs for H1N1 confirmation to Pune and awaiting results. A well-known infectious specialist from a reputed South Mumbai hospital, who has sent 3-4 samples to NIV, Pune, however, said it would be too early to say anything, as the virus is undergoing some transformation.
Confirming that the erratic weather transition was the prime cause of the H1N1 raising its ugly head, state surveillance officer Dr Pradip Awate said, ?Though winter has led to sporadic swine-flu cases in state, there?re no positive H1N1 cases reported in the city.?

6-yr-old tests positive for H1N1; fourth case in March
Even as the H1N1 patient admitted to Bharati Hospital and Medical College continues to be critical even after six days of admission, another swine flu positive patient has been admitted to Naidu Hospital. Two other swine flu positive cases have been reported, taking the total number of swine flu positive patients in Pune to four since March 5.
A six-year-old girl from Kharadi was admitted to Naidu Hospital on March 9. The baby was referred to the infectious diseases hospital from a private hospital on suspicion of H1N1.
"The baby is in the isolation ward and stable," said Dr Shyam Satpute, the medical officer at Naidu Hospital. The Pune Municipal Corporation records show that after a single positive case in October 2011, H1N1 has got reported after five months.
At Bharati Hospital, the 51-year-old autorickshaw driver residing at Katraj continues to be on ventilator support. "However, since there is no deterioration, we are hoping he'll pull through," said dean Dr Vivek Saoji.
Dr Chandrakant Satane, an officer at district H1N1 control cell, said other H1N1 cases include a pregnant woman at Chinchwad's Aditya Birla Hospital and a patient taking Tamiflu on OPD basis at Command Hospital. Since April 2011, a total of 27 H1N1 positive cases have got reported.
"The pregnant woman has delivered a baby and is recovering, while the fourth patient wasn't even admitted. Both are doing fine," said Satane.
"We need to be alert as some population is yet to come in contact with virus," said paediatrician Dr Sharad Agharkhedkar.
Physician Dr Vivek Billampelly said extra care should be taken as symptoms for both seasonal flu and swine flu are similar.

11 H1N1 cases in a week, health officials on alert
A sudden rise in the number of swine flu patients in a week has put health authorities on an alert with doctors being advised not to rule out H1N1 virus infection among influenza related cases. Health authorities have registered 11 swine flu patients in a week. Three are on ventilator, while two are critical, health authorities said.
New infections are being reported from Bhosari, Kharadi, Nigdi, Kothrud and Lonikand. A 55-year-old woman from Lonikand who was admitted to Global Hospital at Rahatne Phate and a 30-year-old pregnant woman who had to undergo a premature delivery at Aditya Birla Hospital are on ventilator, Dr Vinayak More, district civil surgeon said. Dr S T Pardeshi, chief medical officer at PMC, said two patients were critical, however, surveillance measures have been stepped up and doctors have been told to check influenza patients for swine flu.
Doctors across hospitals admit there is an increase in the number of cases of viral pneumonia and a few are turning positive for H1N1 virus (swine flu). However, there is no reason to panic as sporadic cases will occur, said state surveillance officer Dr Pradip Awate. On their part, the National Institute of Virology (NIV) is also conducting research at Janata Vasahat and other slums to estimate the viral disease load. This is being done with general practitioners, Awate said and hence there is a likelihood that more number of patients were being examined as part of the research project. NIV officials were however unavailable for comment.
?We are increasing our vigilance,? said Dr Prachee Sathe, nodal officer for H1N1 virus infection and head of Ruby Hall Clinic ICU. There is no need to panic as medical fraternity anticipates some cases due to weather conditions. The clinical picture is mild and swine flu should be treated as any other flu, Dr Sharad Agharkhedkar, former president of the city unit of the Indian Medical Association said. Symptomatic treatment is important, he added.

Swine flu: 12 cases detected in Pune
Pune, Mar 14 (PTI) Detection of about 12 Swine flu cases in the last fortnight has put the health authorities here on an alert, as two patients are reported to be in a critical condition. While some of the cases have been detected in a "pro-active" research survey, undertaken by the city-based National Institute of Virology (NIV) in a locality here, other non-specified areas, too, have reported H1N1 infections. "While the cases detected by NIV are being treated as outdoor patients without admission, other cases, which include two critical ones, call for a greater surveillance, as Pune had not reported any fatality on account of Swine flu in the last year," Dr Pradip Awate, State swine flu surveillance officer told PTI. Two of the three critical patients, admitted to ICU in different hospitals, were put on ventilator, health officials said. General practitioners, treating seasonal influenza cases, have been advised to screen patients for suspected H1N1 infections, they added. Pune became the epicentre of swine flu cases since recording the first fatality of the dreaded infection in 2009, leading to vigorous surveillance measures that saw a substantial reduction in its transmission. H1N1 claims its 1st victim of year
Doctors are shocked after the city registered its first swine flu fatality of the year with the death of a 48-year-old woman in Sahyadri Hospital.
The deceased, a resident of Tandulwadi in Baramati, was also suspected to be suffering from pancreatic cancer.
Warning signs
"After continued symptoms of swine flu since March 8, she was taken to KEM hospital on March 10. The hospital authorities immediately advised that she be admitted in Sahyadri Hospital," a health official said.
"The doctors immediately sent swabs to Lal Pathological Laboratory for testing as she had all the symptoms of swine flu. She tested positive and was since then on a ventilator. She succumbed to the infection within four days," he added.

Woman dies of swine flu, 3 in serious condition
A 48-year-old woman died of swine flu at the Sahyadri Hospital here on Wednesday, while three more patients continue to be on ventilator support in various city hospitals. Apart from these cases, there are 10 patients who have been diagnosed positive for the H1N1 virus, district health officials said. This is the fourth death in Maharashtra due to the virus this year, and the first in Pune.
