The deadly viral fever Chickungunya, which had taken lives of about 100 people in the year 2006, struck again with the death of a woman from South Aryad in Kerala.

According to sources, the woman was taken to the Medical College hospital.

Though cases of other viral fevers such as swine flu were being reported since the beginning of monsoon, this was the first case of chickungunya reported in Alappuzha region, the sources said.

According to the District Medical Officer (DMO), over 1,200 persons had been taking treatment for different types of fevers in the medical college hospital, taluk hospital and public health centres. (With Inputs from Agencies)
