    BJP demands white paper on death of 11 infants

    BJP Tamil Nadu unit president Tamilisai Soundararajan on Wednesday demanded a 'white paper' on the deaths of 11 infants at Dharmapuri Government Medical College Hospital and the resignation of the Health Minister.

    Yesterday, Chief Minister O Panneerselvam said the deaths were due to "natural" causes and not "due to medical negligence."

    "Very young age of mothers, short interval between the pregnancies, low birth weight and pre-term delivery are the reasons for the death of 11 babies," he had said.

    On November 14, five infants died at the Neonatal Intensive Care unit and the figure rose to 11 on November 17.

    A newborn baby girl, referred from the Government Hospital at Dharmapuri, died at the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital in Salem on Tuesday.

    The preterm death percentage has been the same in the last four years, says Dr. Geethalakshmi.

    The percentage was 11.4 during 2011, 10.3 during 2012, 11 during 2013, and 10.74 so far in 2014. Of the total 4,143 admissions till November 2014, there have been 445 deaths. These include 218 out-born admission deaths and 144 hospital deaths.

    ?Of the 11 babies, seven weighed below 2.5 kg. Of the seven, the weight of five premature babies ranged between 1.2 kg and 1.75 kg. The gestation period for normal babies is 37 weeks. However, these babies were born between 28 weeks and 34 weeks. As such, a monitoring committee headed by Director of the Medical Education, Dr S Geethalakshmi, has been deputed to Dharmapuri,? the Chief Minister said.
