70 diarrhoea cases, 2 deaths in 5 days
Health Dept blames unhygienic conditions at illegal ?vehras? for the high number of cases

Diarrhoea has started spreading its tentacles in areas like Muslim Colony and Sherpur from where more than 70 cases of mild diarrhoea and two deaths due to gastroenteritis have been reported in the last five days. The Health Department says the reasons behind the high number of such cases are water contamination and unhygienic conditions at the illegal ?vehras?. which are flourishing under political patronage in these areas.

Dr Parvinderpal Singh Sidhu, Senior Medical Officer, Community Health Centre, Sahnewal, said: "From Sherpur to Dhandari, there are about 1,700 illegal vehras where migrants live under unhygienic conditions. These vehras are a common sight at Muslim Colony, Fish Market, Fauji Colony, Fauji-da-Mohalla, Sherpur Kalan, Dhandari and other localities. Many of these vehras were earlier poultry farms and have very small rooms. These people cook, bathe and sleep in these dark rooms."

158 new diarrhoea cases reported as water supply continues

Even after more than 250 people have fallen prey to diarrhoea, with three succumbing, the municipal corporation has failed to carry out the health department's instructions to disconnect water supply to the affected areas, with 158 new cases being reported on Saturday.


On Friday, the corporation had claimed that water supply had been disconnected into these areas.

However, on Saturday morning, new patients told civil surgeon RL Bassan and epidemiologist Satish Sood at the medical camp at Garha health dispensary that they still were getting water supply at their houses in Guru Diwan Nagar, and had fallen ill after drinking that water.

50 new cholera patients at Garha
Total reaches 508; all 18 water samples taken from Garha not potable

As many as 50 new patients of cholera have been reported in the Garha area of the district. With this, the total in the area has reached 508. While the total patients reported at the civil dispensary in Garha were 160, out of these, 50 were found to be suffering from cholera. Four of the critical patients were referred to the Civil Hosital.

Despite a number of patients being discharged, the average at the Civil Hospital continues to be 30. About 20 patients were found admitted in the male and female wards alone and counting the ones admitted to the paediatrics (seven), ENT (four) and orthopaedics (five) wards, the number reached 36.

Doctors at the Civil Hospital said while the OPD cholera patients had decreased, there was a substantial rise in patients suffering from viral fever (in some accompanied with dysentery).

Diarrhoea outbreak: 23 water samples fail test

As many as 23 water samples collected by the health department from Guru Diwan Nagar, Tara Chand colony and other cholera-affected areas of Garha locality last week have been declared unfit for human consumption.

Six samples were sent to state-level water testing laboratory in Chandigarh and other samples were tested at the district-level integrated disease surveillance project's lab.

It is said that the drinking water supply got mixed with sewage water, which contaminated it.

Over two weeks after several cases of diarrhoea were reported from Fatehgarh Mohalla, five-year-old Prince, the only child of his parents, died after suffering from the ailment for the past couple of days at Prem Vihar, Phambran Road, on Sunday.


?Prince was complaining of loose motions for the past few days. On Saturday night, we felt his condition deteriorated as he was not eating anything. We rushed him to a nearby hospital on Sunday morning, where the doctors declare him dead,? said Prince?s grandmother Asha.

Health team finds 14 diarrhoea cases
Later in the day, district epidemiologist Dr Anil Verma on directions of civil surgeon Dr Subhash Batta reached Prem Vihar with a six-member team, including medical officers.

The health team conducted a medical camp at government school. Dr Verma said a total of 113 patients were examined and 14 cases were of mild diarrhoea were detected. All other patients complained of fever, body ache, backache, pain in abdomen and other ailments, he said.

Payal diarrhea outbreak in the village Siyudha four, including a child, were killed. Some 450 villages with a population of five thousand people are vulnerable to diarrhea. Alarmed at the health department diarrhea teams reached the village and the village place - the place made camp. Rajat Agarwal and civil surgeon Dr Subhash Batta DC on Sunday visited the village. Civil surgeon Dr Subhash Batta said that deaths from diarrhea in the area, while three deaths were natural. The village also has some connection to the water cut.

One thing is starkly clear that Sihora village in Payal tehsil is in the grip of gastroenteritis, even as there are difference of opinion among the officials and the villagers over the deaths due to the epidemic. Officials claim that a woman has died due to gastroenteritis, while villagers say four lives have been lost to the epidemic in three days.

Supply of contaminated water to the village is being see as the cause behind the spread of the disease. Sarpanch of Sihora Village Shaminder Singh said, ?The cases of vomiting and diarrhoea came into our notice on July 3 and after that situation became worse. There are nearly 400 families in village, which got affected. Four deaths, including a 8-dayold baby and three women aged 65, 70 and 85 years have died of diarrhoea.?

But civil surgeon Dr Subhash Batta said that only one death that of a 65-year-old woman had taken place due to diarrhoea in the village. Rest of the deaths in the village took place for some other reasons

?DIarrhoea outbreak has been reported from Ravidasiya Basti in the village which is dominated by SC/ST population. Of the total 400 water connections in the village, around 100 are in Ravidasiya Basti and majority of them are illegal. Water pipes have been installed through sewerage lines and drinking water is getting mixed with sewerage water which will obviously contaminate the drinking water. No action has been taken,? said a source from the health department. ?We still suspect that one reported death was due to diarrhoea,? said Dr Abnash, district health officer.

Investigations have revealed around 1,500 residents of Ravidass Basti at Sehora village have been suffering from diarrhoea due to the alleged supply of contaminated water to the area. Illegal water connections and laying water pipes through drains were identified as major reasons behind the contamination of the water supply.
