Pathologists in Nagpur detect rare disease caused by a strain of bacteria

NAGPUR: A farm worker from a village in Yavatmal district passed away in a city hospital a few days ago. Despite the efforts of doctors, the disease he was suffering from could not be identified and therefore an 'appropriate' treatment' could not come his way.
It was only after he passed away that some pathologists could indentify his illness to be one that is dubbed by the Americans as the 'Vietnamese time bomb'.
The disease is an infection caused by a strain of bacteria called burkoholderia pseudomallei [sic]. Rarely found in India, this is a very common infection afflicting people in the Southeast Asian countries.
