Rare diseases on a roll in Rajasthan

Jaipur: Till a few years ago, dengue was a disease confined just to Delhi, leptospirosis was an ailment heard of only in Mumbai and scrub typhus was just an Americanism.
But now doctors diagnose these problems almost daily in Jaipur.This year there have been 19 deaths due to scrub typhus in and around Jaipur, 158 cases of dengue have been reported, leptospirosis cases are also on the rise, though in small numbers, malaria is sweeping through the city and encephalitis has come to next door Alwar.
?Till few years ago, these diseases were not even known to exist in and around Jaipur. This is a new phenomenon. The ecology has changed completely,? says Dr Sudhir Mehta, Professor, medicine department, SMS Hospital.
