Kolkata, Jun 30 (PTI) The infant mortality rate, which denotes number of children dying
within one year of birth in every 1,000 births was 33 in West Bengal in 2009.
"It is estimated that the current IMR of the state is below 30. West Bengal ranks fourth in IMR after Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Kerala upto 2009," official sources said.
Around 15 lakh children were born in the state every year and around 40,000 died within one year.
Out of these, almost two-thirds died within four weeks during the neo-natal period.
For critically ill neonates, who were kept in neonatal intensive care units, the IMR was between 15 to 20 per cent of the entire admission.
The death rate at the B C Roy children''s hospital was also of the same order, the sources said.
