Fear of bird flu increased the demand for fish: Prices doubled in Hata, now sold at Rs 300 per kg from Rs 150 Manoj Kumar Yadav | Hata9 hours ago

Due to fear of bird flu, people in Hata have kept away from chicken and eggs. This has had a direct impact on the demand for fish. The price of fish has doubled in the last one week. Fish that was available for Rs 120-150 per kg in Hata market is now being sold for Rs 250-300 per kg.

The demand for Rohu, Backer and Silver fish has increased the most. There are no customers at chicken shops. Fish sellers say that prices have increased due to increased demand and reduced supply. In rural areas, people are reluctant to take chicken to the market.

The health department says that there is no danger in eating well-cooked chicken. Still, people are afraid. Experts believe that until the outbreak of bird flu subsides, fish prices may remain high.

Gorakhpur News: Amid the bird flu infection, the remains of sacrifices will be dumped near the zoo
        June 7, 2025

Meanwhile, the remains of sacrificial animals on Bakrid will be dumped near the boundary wall of the zoo. The zoo administration had already written a letter to the Municipal Corporation and expressed its objection. Despite this, about 20 pits were made there on Friday night.
Shaheed Ashfaqulla Khan Zoological Park Director Vikas Yadav said that more than 400 wildlife are protected in the zoo. Taking into account the experiences of the past years, we had already written a letter to the Municipal Corporation expressing our objection and concern. We had also received an assurance that this would not be done. After the rains, along with the foul smell, the risk of infection also increases. The wildlife gets disturbed by the foul smell arising from the garbage and remains, due to which there is a possibility of them falling ill.

In compliance with the orders of NGT, about 150 acres of land along the boundary wall of the zoo is under the supervision of Gorakhpur Forest Division. Despite opposition from the people living nearby, the remains of sacrificial animals have been dumped here on Bakrid for the last several years. The animal crematorium built at Ekla Dam with a capacity of 1000 kg per hour has been closed for the last one and a half months due to technical flaws.

        -
        Version...
This time the remains of sacrifices will be dumped at different places in the city through scientific disposal method. Only 20 percent of the remains will be dumped near the zoo. The operation of the animal crematorium in Nausad will also start in a day or two.

Ducks primary source of bird flu outbreak at Gkp zoo: CZA
          Jun 08, 2025 10:53 PM IST

According to the report, the origin of the bird flu strain points to migratory ducks at Ramgarh Lake, about three kilometres from the zoo. Ducks are known reservoir hosts for the influenza virus and often do not display symptoms despite being infected. After a hailstorm on May 1, several dead ducks were found near Ramgarh Lake, but they allegedly went unnoticed by officials.

The report also identified crows as key contributors to the spread of the virus, which led to the deaths of three big cats. The district authorities received the report on Saturday evening.

Zoo director Vikas Yadav confirmed, “The investigation report, along with precautionary instructions, has been received.”

The zoo will now focus on protecting animals from migratory birds, enhancing biosafety measures, and conducting regular health screenings.

This closure may be extended further depending on upcoming lab results, officials indicated.

After a hailstorm on May 1, several dead ducks were found near Ramgarh Lake, but they allegedly went unnoticed by officials.

The CZA conducted an inspection of the zoo on May 19 and 20, collecting samples from both inside and outside the zoo premises.

Each year, thousands of migratory birds flock to Ramgarh Lake, drawing tourists and bird watchers. The CZA report emphasizes the need to address the risk of infectious diseases. The report has recommended regular disinfection of the area, restriction of public access during outbreaks, and enhanced coordination between the forest, health, and municipal departments to prevent recurrence.

Zoo director Yadav also stated that five infected animals — two leopard cubs, a cockatiel, and a vulture — are undergoing treatment and showing signs of improvement. However, sample examination reports of these animals sent to NIHSAD are still awaited. Additionally, the second negative reports for 35 other samples are also pending.

Medicines given for liver and kidney
The zoo's Deputy Director and Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Yogesh Pratap Singh said that Shakti and Bhairavi died due to multiple organ failure. In view of this, all the wild animals were given immuno boosters. The bird flu virus damages the kidney and liver, that is why its medicines were started giving beforehand. Due to this, these animals became healthy.

There is no information about the symptoms after the disease
The reports of tigress Malani, leopard cubs and Himalayan vulture in the zoo have come negative, but no one knows what changes will come in the health of the animal after the disease. Actually, no specific study is available on the symptoms of animals after recovering from bird flu. On the other hand, Malani is also old. Even though she has become negative, her condition is still stable.
