Surveillance has been intensified in the Tamil Nadu border districts bordering Kerala. As part of this, Animal Husbandry Department officials are stationed near checkposts at the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border, including Walayar and Velanthavalam, and are conducting intensive checks on vehicles coming from Kerala.
Similarly, in the border areas of Nilgiris, Theni, and Kanyakumari districts, officials are monitoring whether chicken-related products are being brought into Tamil Nadu from Kerala. Vehicles carrying ducks, chickens, eggs, and poultry feed from Kerala are being turned back.
Vehicles related to poultry farms that travel from Tamil Nadu to Kerala and back are being disinfected. It is noteworthy that orders have also been issued to conduct inspections at poultry farms in the border areas of Kerala.
Meanwhile, the presence of avian influenza (H5N1) has been confirmed in sample tests conducted at a laboratory in Bhopal. Accordingly, 19,811 birds are to be culled in Alappuzha alone. Birds within a one-kilometer radius of the affected areas will be culled. This includes chickens, ducks, and quails.
Similarly, officials have been instructed to intensify surveillance in districts with a high concentration of poultry farms, including Namakkal, in coordination with the Animal Husbandry Department.

Bird flu has been spreading rapidly in Alappuzha and Thrissur in Kerala for the past few days. Infected birds, including chickens, ducks, and quails, are being culled. As there is a possibility of transporting infected birds to bordering states, those states have intensified surveillance at their borders. Accordingly, a bird flu prevention center has been set up at the Walayar checkpost in Coimbatore, a bordering state of Tamil Nadu. Health department officials are spraying disinfectant on vehicles coming from Kerala. Drivers are also undergoing body temperature checks. Vehicles are allowed into Coimbatore only after ascertaining their origin. You can learn more detailed information about this through the video linked here...
Medical monitoring is essential if fever symptoms are present
December 27, 2025
Translated, emphasis is mine
Chennai: Following the spread of bird flu and African swine fever in Kerala, the Public Health Department has instructed that those arriving from that state with fever symptoms be subjected to medical monitoring.
Regarding this, Public Health Department officials said: There is a possibility of the infection spreading from chickens and other bird species affected by bird flu to humans. The infection can easily spread to humans from their waste.
Fever, headache, muscle cramps, cough, and shortness of breath are symptoms of bird flu. Therefore, it has been instructed that those arriving in Tamil Nadu from states affected by this type of infection, if they show fever symptoms, should be immediately subjected to medical monitoring. Hospitals should keep their infrastructure ready to deal with bird flu infections.
It is essential to disinfect the hospital premises and inform the health department about the details of the infection.
Although African swine fever does not significantly affect humans, there is a possibility of pigs being affected. Therefore, health officials have been instructed to work in coordination with the animal husbandry department, they said.
Bird flu infection has been confirmed in Alappuzha, Nedumudi, Cheruthana, and Purakkad areas of our neighboring state, Kerala. Tests conducted at the Bhopal laboratory have confirmed the spread of the life-threatening 'H5N1' virus.
Therefore, the Public Health Department has ordered the immediate commencement of intensive surveillance and preventive measures in the border districts of both states to prevent the spread of the disease. A team comprising district livestock and district health department officials, including doctors, has been formed at the Onbatharu checkpost near Udumalai. This team is collecting details of vehicles and people arriving from Kerala.
District Deputy Director of Health Services, Jayanthi, said:
The health condition, including fever, of those arriving from Kerala is being continuously monitored. Daily updates are being provided on the place of origin and duration of illness for those admitted to hospitals with persistent fever.
Since the medical teams are maintaining close surveillance, people need not panic. Eating well-cooked food is safe. The public has been advised to immediately inform the Animal Husbandry Department if any birds die under unusual circumstances.
Action taken in Tamil Nadu against bird flu.
December 28, 2025
Chennai: With reports emerging of bird flu spreading from Kerala, a neighboring state of Tamil Nadu, measures have been intensified to prevent the disease from spreading to poultry farms in Tamil Nadu's Namakkal district, one of the country's largest egg production centers. Although Namakkal does not share a direct border with Kerala, authorities and poultry farmers have taken precautionary measures considering the district's significant role in India's poultry industry.
Namakkal alone has nearly 1,500 poultry farms, producing millions of eggs daily and supplying them to several states across India.
In view of the rapidly spreading bird flu in Kerala, the Tamil Nadu government has intensified surveillance at inter-state borders, increased inspections of poultry transport vehicles, and tightened sanitary monitoring across farms. Importantly, vehicles entering Tamil Nadu from Kerala are reportedly subjected to rigorous checks. “More than 5 million eggs are exported daily from Namakkal. Export-oriented farms follow stringent safety regulations throughout the year. All birds on the farms are tested every 21 days, and the water used on the farms is also treated to eliminate pathogens,” he said.

Earlier, poultry farms in Tamil Nadu's Namakkal district, which is one of the largest egg-producing hubs in the country, stepped up biosecurity and surveillance measures to prevent the spread of the disease. Namakkal alone accounts for nearly 1,500 poultry farms and produces millions of eggs daily, supplying markets across several Indian states and overseas.
Bird flu not only affects domestic poultry such as chickens, ducks and turkeys but can also spread through wild and migratory birds. In some cases, there's also a risk of transmission to humans. The World Health Organization (WHO), from 2003 to August 2025, reported 990 human cases of bird flu across 25 countries. This also includes 475 deaths which indicates a 48% fatality rate. With such a high fatality rate, it is important to stay cautious and prevent the spread.

Bird Flu Alert: Tamil Nadu To Step Up Surveillance Along Kerala Border
January 1, 2026 With a rise in avian influenza cases reported in parts of Kerala, authorities in Tamil Nadu have intensified surveillance along the border districts.
Chennai:
With a rise in avian influenza cases reported in parts of Kerala, including Alappuzha and Kottayam, authorities in Tamil Nadu have intensified surveillance along the border districts to prevent the disease from spreading into the state. Enhanced monitoring has been put in place, particularly in the Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts, which share a long and porous boundary with Kerala. Acting on the directions of the Animal Husbandry Department, special preventive measures have been initiated under the supervision of Joint Director Dr Balakrishnan. As part of these efforts, check posts have been established at Gudalur and Panthalur taluks in the Nilgiris district to closely monitor the movement of poultry and related materials from Kerala.

There is also a risk of transmission to humans, making early detection and prevention critical.
Authorities have advised poultry farmers to strictly adhere to biosecurity measures. Farmers have been instructed to prevent wild birds from entering poultry farms, avoid rearing different species of birds together, restrict the entry of outsiders and vehicles into farm premises, and refrain from sharing farm equipment.
Disinfection of farm tools and equipment at least twice a month has been made mandatory. Farmers have also been urged to immediately report any unusual illness or sudden deaths among birds to the nearest veterinary assistant or animal husbandry office, enabling swift containment measures to prevent the spread of avian influenza.
Bird flu outbreak in India: Early symptoms, preventive tips ..
January 2, 2025
Excerpts:
The virus mainly infects poultry and wild birds and occasionally infects mammals including crows and big cats, but it creates a dangerous human health threat when people touch infected animals, or their contaminated surroundings. Initially, this presents as typical flu symptoms, but they can develop into dangerous pneumonia. Let's learn more...
...Early symptoms to spot first
The initial symptoms of Bird flu resemble typical cold or seasonal flu symptoms, which appear one to three days following contact with contaminated bird waste, feathers or saliva. Look for sudden high fever above 38°C, chills shaking the body, dry cough, sore throat, and runny nose. The body experiences muscle pain which moves from arms to legs and spine, while fatigue reaches critical levels to prevent any basic activities. The nose produces both runny and stuffy discharge, which becomes more severe by the minute while headaches intensify their pressure on the eyes. Children need close monitoring for nausea, vomiting and loose stools which occur without any food consumption. The eyes of patients develop symptoms which include redness, tearing, swelling and pain, that resemble viral conjunctivitis when they touch their eyes during handling.
...Breathing trouble...
...When symptoms turn serious...
Who faces the highest risk right now
The group which includes poultry farmers, veterinarians, slaughterhouse workers and live bird market sellers, faces the highest risk because they breathe in dust while handling fluids without protective equipment. The death of backyard chickens or duck ponds creates a risk for pet owners who have these animals. The infection causes worse health outcomes for children, who play near ponds with dead wild birds and for elderly patients, with lung problems and people who have asthma. People who visit outbreak areas including Kerala wetlands, become exposed to the disease. Healthy adults usually have the ability to fight off light infections.
‘Mutated coronavirus behind seasonal flu‑like illness in TN’
January 2, 2026
Public health authorities in Tamil Nadu have identified a mutated form of the coronavirus as one of the causes behind the current wave of seasonal flu‑like symptoms spreading across the state.
snip
Since September 2025, thousands of residents across Tamil Nadu have reported symptoms such as fever, fatigue, dry cough, sore throat, nasal congestion, and joint pains. While many cases resemble ordinary seasonal influenza, health department officials have attributed a significant share of these illnesses to a variant of the coronavirus that has undergone genetic changes but remains less potent than earlier pandemic strains.
Authorities emphasise that the current circulating coronavirus variant is not causing severe disease. Most affected individuals recover within just a few days after standard treatment for flu‑like illnesses. However, some people—especially those with prolonged dry cough lasting up to four to eight weeks—have reported lingering respiratory symptoms even after fever subsides.
snip
Officials have urged the public not to panic, even as flu‑like illnesses circulate. Preventive measures such as regular hand washing, wearing masks in crowded spaces, and staying home when sick can help reduce transmission of respiratory viruses—be it influenza or coronavirus variants.
Public health authorities in Tamil Nadu have identified a mutated form of the coronavirus as one of the causes behind the current wave of seasonal flu‑like symptoms spreading across the state.
