H5N1 was confirmed after a mass die-off of ducks at the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases Lab in Bhopal.

      18000 ducks were reared. Five and a half months old. A radius of one kilometer from the confirmed spot of bird flu has been declared as a bird flu affected area. All domesticated birds within a kilometer radius of the area where the disease is detected will be euthanized and scientifically disposed of under the supervision of the Animal Welfare Department. Actions will be taken to disinfect here. The rapid action team of the Animal Welfare Department will euthanize the birds and bury them scientifically. The disposal process is as per the instructions of the central government in 2021.

      The sale and trafficking of birds and their products in Ward 1 of Paipad panchayat has been completely banned till further notice. A radius of one kilometer to 10 kilometers has also been declared as a surveillance zone. The marketing and trafficking of birds and their products has been banned for four days from Thursday (May 30) to June 2 in other wards of Paipad panchayat, Changanassery municipality, Vazhapally, Thrikodithanam and Kurichi gram panchayats under the surveillance zone.

      Following the confirmation of bird flu, a meeting of officials of various departments was held at the Collectorate and it was decided to take immediate measures. The District Collector directed the coordinated action of Animal Protection Department, Local Self-Government, Revenue, Police, Forest, Health, Fire Rescue, Motor Vehicle Department and Local Self-Government Institutions.

            Rapid response teams (RRT) of the Animal Husbandry department (AHD) will cull 5,079 birds within the one-km radius of the bird flu hotspot in Muhamma grama panchayat in Alappuzha on Friday.

            Officials said here on Wednesday that the presence of the H5N1 subtype of the Influenza A virus was detected in chickens at Mukkalvattam (Ward 9) in the panchayat. A poultry farm owner raising chicks lost several birds last week. Following the bird deaths, the AHD sent samples to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases, Bhopal, for analyses, which tested positive for avian influenza earlier this week.
