    4 dengue cases detected, total mounts to 49

    PANAJI: Four persons tested positive for dengue in the state on Tuesday, taking the total number of confirmed dengue cases this year to 49.


    Health officials said that of the four persons who have tested positive, two are from Santa Cruz, one is from Panaji, and one from Aldona.

    Dengue is an infectious disease transmitted from one person to another by the Aedes Aegypti mosquito.

    An infected person complains of fever, severe headache, falling platelet count which could occasionally cause shock and haemorrhage (bleeding), leading to death.

    Health authorities said that necessary steps have been taken and that health officers have been posted in the respective areas.

    Meanwhile, four suspected H1N1 cases have been put on treatment and quarantined at home.

    A boy named Godfrey Fernandes, 6, from Calangute died of dengue on Thursday morning while undergoing treatment Goa Medical College and Hospital in Bambolim.

    Confirming the development, Dr Deepak Kabadi, Deputy director of health services said that this was the first dengue death of the year in Goa.

    Speaking with the media persons, Kabadi said: "Clinically, the child died of what is known as the dengue shock syndrome (complicated dengue fever). We have sent the blood samples for microbiological examination and the report is awaited."

    Initially, Godfrey was admitted to a private hospital in Mapusa with fever pain in the abdomen and vomiting.

    However, on Wednesday, the victim was shifted to the GMC where he was tested positive for dengue.

    Notably, nearly 50 people had tested positive for dengue in the state so far.

    According to the private doctors, there has been an increase of 10 to 15 per cent in dengue cases this year.
