    Culling to continue for next 5 days in Meghalaya

    SHILLONG: Culling and mopping operations will continue for the next five days in Meghalaya to contain the spread of bird-flu in East Garo Hills district, official sources said.

    "Until last evening, 3026 fowls were subjected to hygienic culling by the district administration, even as specialised teams of Rapid Response Teams and medical officers were activated within three kilometers from the epicentre where the bird-flu was detected" District Deputy Commissioner Pravin Bakshi told PTI.

    The teams are concentrating in areas within three kilometers of the government-run farm for the past four days and a total of 21 villages have been sanitised, he said.

      Shillong, Jan 17 (PTI) Culling of bird-flu infected fowls would be completed in Meghalaya by tomorrow. "There are four villages within 3 km from the epicentre for which culling of all fowls is mandatory as per Government of India guidelines," state Veterinary director L Lyngwa said. Until last evening, more than 3444 fowls and more than 1200 eggs were subjected to hygienic culling in East Garo Hills district, including those from the government-run farm where the flu broke out a week ago. According to Lyngwa, culling is expected to be completed by tomorrow evening.

        Bird flu in Meghalaya, nearly 5000 fowls culled

        Shillong, Jan 18(PTI): More than 4,600 fowls from 25 villages of East Garo Hills district in Meghalaya have been destroyed to contain the spread of bird-flu, officials said here today.

        ?We expect to cross 5,000 today?culling operation is left in only two villages within 3 km from the epi-centre,? state's veterinary director L Lyngwa told PTI.

        On Tuesday, 1222 fowls from four villages were culled following stict guidelines from the Centre, he said.

        A total of 4666 fowls were subjected to culling and hygienically disposed off even as more than 1500 eggs were destroyed in seven days of cleaning operation in East Garo Hills district, including those from the government-run farm where the disease broke a week ago.

        Lyngwa was optimistic that culling operation will be over by Wednesday evening.

          Bird flu under control: Meghalaya govt

          Shillong, Jan 19 (PTI) A week after bird flu was detected at a government-run farm in Meghalaya''s East Garo Hills district, the government today said the situation was under control.

          "We have completed disinfection process in the poultry farm Williamnagar town and the whole situation is completely normalising," District Deputy Commissioner Bakshi said.

          Culling operations are not technically over until disinfection process is over in all villages identified, he said, adding disinfection in households will start today and may take two to three days.

          While the authorities in the district have completely subjected 6340 domesticated birds to hygienic culling till Wednesday evening, 8307 eggs and 850 kg of feed were also destroyed.

            Bad weather stalls culling operations

            Shillong, January 19 (NNN): Bad weather stalled the culling operations of birds in and around the bird flu infected town of Willimnagar in East Garo Hills district of Meghalaya.The government intended to complete the culling of poultry birds in 17 odd villages including Williamnagar on Thursday . 6340 birds, 8307 eggs and 840 Kgs of feeds were disposed off by the quarantine group from the state veterinary department , informed the Deputy Commissioner of East Garo Hills district Pravin Bakshi,adding ,?Inclement weather restricted the specialized team from going out with the exercise". He further said that the number of culled birds and disinfected poultry farms could have been higher and could have been completed on Thursday, if not for the bad weather. However, the poultry farm which the first detection of avian flu was made has been totally disinfected.

                SHILLONG: Authorities in Meghalaya have completed disinfection operations in a bird flu-hit area of East Garo Hills district, an official said Sunday. "We have completed the entire process of disinfection and decontamination in 21 villages within a three-kilometer radius of a government-run farm at Williamnagar," said Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Director D. Lyungwa.

                  Shillong, Feb 9 (PTI) Eighteen days after culling of bird-flu affected poultry ended in Meghalaya's East Garo Hills, residents of a locality and government officials were in a tizzy after more than 100 pigeons died in the past one week here. State veterinary officials rushed to the spot today to pick up the dead birds for sampling and to aware the residents of the possible bird-flu virus afflicting the birds. "We have rushed veterinary doctors to Keatinge Road locality to initiate remedial measures and to take samples of the dead birds for testing," State Veterinary Director L Lyngwa told PTI. He said, "We are sending the samples to Assam-based Regional Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (RRDL) for a detailed testing tomorrow before we can take decision on what to do next...

                    Blood samples of dead pigeons in Meghalaya sent to RRDL

                    Veterinary authorities in Meghalaya today sent blood samples of dead pigeons, which died here in Keating Road area over the last one month, while the district authorities sounded a general alert in the area. Animal and Husbandry Veterinary Director D. Lyngwa said more than 100 pigeons had died over the last one month at Keating Road area, and on Thursday three more pigeons died of unnatural deaths in the area. ' We have sent the blood samples of the pigeons this morning for test to Assam-based Regional Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (RRDL) and the results are awaited, ' Dr Lyngwa said. The Director also said, ' Since the exact cause of the deaths of birds in the area is not yet confirmed, we have not decided to impose any restriction on consumption. But if the test proves positive, we will impose restrictions. ' Meanwhile, East Khasi Hills district administration had sounded a general alert after the unnatural deaths of pigeons in Keating road area situated in the heart of the city. ' The district administration has taken all precautionary measures and rapid response team has been geared up to tackle the situation in case the laboratory confirms bird flu, ' East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal said. He also said a seven km radius of the area, where the birds died, had been kept under surveillance. The deaths of over a hundred birds in the heart of the city had raised fresh fears of bird flu. The unnatural dead of pigeons surfaced 19 days after the rapid response team completed disinfection operations in birdflu-hit area of East Garo Hills district. Altogether, 6,538 birds, including domesticated fowls, were culled, 9,157 eggs and more than 800 kg of feeds destroyed in 21 villages in East Garo Hills after the Bhopal-based High Security Animal Disease Laboratory on January 11 declared that the birds, which died on a government farm in Williamnagar, the district headquarters of East Garo Hills district, tested positive for H5N1 virus.                       Test confirms negative for bird flu in Meghalaya

                      In what can be termed as a major relief to the people of the city, the laboratory test of the unnatural death of pigeons in Keating Road has proved negative. Animal and Husbandry Veterinary Director D. Lyngwa said, The blood samples of the pigeons have confirmed negative for bird flu. On Friday, veterinary authorities sent blood samples of the pigeons to the Assam-based Regional Research and Diagnostic Laboratory (RRDL) for testing. More tests would be conducted to confirm the exact cause of deaths of the pigeons, with results due next week, Mr Lyngwa said. Over the last one month more than 100 pigeons have died at Keating Road area in the heart of the city, and on Thursday three more pigeons died of unnatural deaths in the area trigerring fear of the out break of bird flu. The district authorities had sounded a general alert in the area even as a seven-kilometre radius of the area where the birds died has been kept under surveillance. The deaths of pigeons surfaced after 19 days, when a rapid response team completed disinfection operations in bird flu-hit area of East Garo Hills district. Altogether, 6,538 birds including domesticated fowls were culled, 9,157 eggs and more than 800 kg of feeds were destroyed in 21 villages in East Garo Hills, after the Bhopal-based High Security Animal Disease Laboratory declared the birds were infected with H5N1 virus.
