Sigh of relief in disease belt

Mumbai, March 20: Maharashtra health authorities today said the spate of diseases reported from across the state was under control and there was no cause for alarm.
The reassurance came as a welcome relief for residents since the microbial siege intensified last week with the African viral fever chikungunya added to the ranks of the bird flu, dengue and the gastro-enteritis outbreak.
State health secretary Vijay Satbir Singh said the 147 teams working in four bird flu-infected zones in Jalgaon had surveyed 2.61 lakh people and only four with symptoms of the avian influenza have been kept under observation in isolation wards.
The four, who had come into contact with poultry, include a medical officer, a 40-year-old woman, an 11-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl.
?Two are admitted to the Jalgaon district hospital, one in Chopda and one in Nhave sub-district hospitals. Their blood samples have been sent to the National Institute of Virology, but this is merely a precautionary measure. All of them are stable,? Singh said even as health workers continued clean-up operations, spraying disinfectant in homes, backyards and streets.
?The culling (of chickens) is over and we are now cleaning up the place,? Bijay Kumar, the state?s animal husbandry commissioner, told Reuters. ?This will take two days. In a week, we can hopefully say we have contained the spread of bird flu (in Maharashtra).?
Health secretary Singh said the hospital admissions for suspected chikungunya ? which spreads through mosquitoes and is not transmitted from human to human ? had dropped sharply in Malegaon. Of the 1,230 people admitted to three hospitals and private clinics in Malegaon, only 134 continue to be treated. The rest have been discharged and allowed to return home.
?We had sent 16 samples to the NIV lab from Malegaon. All tested negative for dengue, but two tested positive for chikungunya. The reported death from Malegaon on Sunday was due to encephalitis, and not chikungunya,? Singh clarified, adding that 27,000 water containers, possible breeding grounds for chikungunya mosquitoes, have been destroyed by health workers.
Mumbai also breathed easy after doctors said tests on four samples of suspected cholera had tested negative. Twenty-one new gastro-enteritis patients have been admitted to city hospitals but all are stable.
Doctor Pravin Shingare, dean of the JJ Group of Hospitals, said the gastro-enteritis figure remained steady on 20, which indicated that the outbreak was under control.
Last week, gastro-enteritis cases reported from south Mumbai had shown an alarming increase, with hospital admissions rising from 13 on the first day to 43 on the second, 170 on the third and 227 on day four.

      They have dengue.
      They have chikungunya.
      They have gastroenteritis.
      They have enchepalitis.

What do all these diseases present like?

      Bird flu.

Ohh, and they have that too.

In case anyone was wondering, Maharashtra has a population of roughly 100 million.

Simply put, Maharashtra is going to hell real fast.
