  • India: Lucknow - Bird flu scare prompts Yogi to order measures to check H5 virus outbreak

[Emphasis is mine. Lucknow, a large city in northern India, is the capital of the state of Uttar Pradesh. Population: 4 million (2024)]

    August 14, 2025

Lucknow: Taking cognisance of the potential threat of bird flu, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday directed concerned departments to coordinate and take measures to prevent the prevalence of the H5 virus in the state. He said that efforts should be stepped up in all zoos, sanctuaries, national parks, etc.

On Monday, the bird flu virus was diagnosed in the poultry birds in Rampur after an estimated 15,000 chickens died.

The chief minister also instructed the health department to conduct an in-depth study of the potential impacts of H5 avian influenza on human health and present a report to prevent any chain of infection from reaching human society.

Stating that the protection of protected animals and birds is the top priority of the state govt, and any negligence will not be tolerated, the chief minister said that guidelines issued by the central and state govts should be implemented strictly in all zoos, bird sanctuaries, national parks, wetland areas, and cow shelters in the state.

He further added that zoo premises should be regularly sanitised and, if necessary, blow torching should be carried out. The chief minister has made it mandatory for health checks to be carried out for all wildlife and birds, and food should be provided only after thorough examination. To ensure protection for handlers as well, he added that duties of employees appointed in enclosures should be determined based on the risk level.

"All employees should be given detailed information about the symptoms of avian influenza, modes of infection, and preventive measures. Additionally, they should be provided with all necessary safety equipment, including PPE kits, so they can perform their duties safely," he said.

Focusing on the poultry sector, the chief minister directed that all poultry farms in the state should be strictly monitored while continuous control should be maintained over the movement of poultry products.

The state govt will be in regular touch with national institutions, including the Central Zoo Authority, National Centre for Disease Control, Ministry of Health, Department of Fisheries and Dairy, and Indian Veterinary Research Institute in Bareilly.

"Timely, coordinated, and strict action will pave the way for effective control of this potential infection. All relevant departments must work with mutual cooperation and rapid information exchange to ensure the safety of both the citizens and wildlife of the state," he said.

LUCKNOW: In light of the alleged threat of a bird flu outbreak in western Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday issued directives to the departments concerned to coordinate and implement measures to prevent the prevalence of the H5 virus in the state.

He instructed the authorities to intensify efforts in all zoos, sanctuaries, national parks, and other protected areas. Simultaneously, the Health Department has been tasked with conducting an in-depth study on the potential impact of H5 avian influenza on human health and to present a report aimed at preventing any possible chain of infection from reaching human society.

There have been unconfirmed reports that around 15,000 poultry deaths were allegedly recorded at two poultry farms in Rampur within the past 24 hours. Emergency containment measures were implemented in Rampur district after laboratory tests confirmed an outbreak of avian influenza (bird flu).

The virus was diagnosed in poultry birds in Rampur’s Bilaspur tehsil, which borders Rudrapur in Uttarakhand, prompting the local administration to launch public awareness announcements across the city on Monday evening.

Poultry products from UP banned in Dehradun district amid bird flu scare

Dehradun, 14 Aug: Following the confirmation of a bird flu outbreak in Uttar Pradesh, the Dehradun district administration is on high alert. To prevent the spread of the disease, District Magistrate Savin Bansal today held a crucial meeting with all officials concerned at the District Collectorate and directed them to remain vigilant and act in a coordinated manner. Avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu, is a highly contagious viral disease that primarily affects birds but can, though rarely, spread to humans.

The DM instructed the Animal Husbandry Department to take random samples from all 170 poultry farms in the district within three days and send them for testing as a precautionary measure. Bansal also directed the department to maintain regular surveillance of these farms and activate the rapid response teams. The Forest Department was asked to monitor birds near ponds, lakes, and rivers and to immediately inform the veterinary department if any dead or sick birds are found.

During the meeting, the DM also clarified that as no cases of bird flu have been reported from poultry farms in the district so far, there are no restrictions on them for now. He also asked the Sainik Kalyan Adhikari to alert the Army and paramilitary force headquarters located in the district.

The DM instructed the police department to set up check posts at all border points adjacent to Uttar Pradesh and to prohibit the entry of live chickens, chicken meat, and eggs from outside the state until further orders. He also directed the officials to immediately seal any unauthorised meat shops operating in the district. Furthermore, the DM also instructed all the Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs), the veterinary officers, and the municipal bodies within the district to hold meetings with poultry farm associations and chicken meat traders in their respective areas to raise awareness.

The meeting was also attended by Chief Development Officer Abhinav Shah, City Magistrate Pratyush Singh, SDM Kumkum Joshi, Deputy Municipal Commissioner Santosh Kumar Pandey, Chief Medical Officer Dr Mukesh Kumar Sharma, Chief Veterinary Officer (CVO) Dr SC Joshi, and other officials from relevant departments.
