Canadians in Egypt jail to be held another 15 days
    By MARYAM SHAH, QMI Agency

TORONTO -- A Toronto filmmaker and a London, Ont., doctor will be detained in an Egyptian prison for another 15 days while a prosecutor examines their cases.

John Greyson of Toronto and emergency room doctor Tarek Loubani of London, Ont. met with Cairo prosecutor Mohamed Heta over the weekend and learned Sunday that they would remain jailed -- still without any charges laid -- for another 15 days as allowed by Egyptian law.

The pair had approached Egyptian police for directions when they were arrested on Aug. 16 during a series of deadly riots in Cairo.

They were in Egypt on their way to Gaza, where Loubani planned on teaching at a hospital and Greyson wanted to observe and film his work...

Canadians on hunger strike in Egyptian jail claim they were beaten

John Greyson and Tarek Loubani 'stripped, slapped and accused of being foreign mercenaries' at notorious Tora prison

Two Canadians on hunger strike inside an Egyptian prison have been beaten during their six-week-long detention, the pair have said in statement smuggled out of their jail cell.

Filmmaker John Greyson and medic Tarek Loubani were arrested during disturbances in Cairo on 16 August, and detained without charge ever since. The case has become a cause c?l?bre in the west with actors Alec Baldwin and Charlize Theron among thousands calling for their release. But little was known about either the circumstances of their arrest or their treatment inside the notorious Tora prison south of Cairo.

In their statement, posted on the website of a friend, Greyson and Loubani said they were arrested after watching a pro-Morsi protest near their hotel that turned into Egypt's fourth state-led massacre since the overthrow of Mohamed Morsi in July. Loubani and Greyson were on their way to Gaza, where they planned to train Palestinian doctors, but had been held up in Cairo because of the political upheaval there.

Canadians John Greyson and Tarek Loubani, jailed in Egypt since their Aug. 16 arrest, have had their imprisonment extended for another 45 days, according to a friend who spoke with the pair's lawyers in Egypt.

The two men are on the 13th day of a hunger strike in Tora prison, south of Cairo.

On Sunday afternoon, Lynne Yelich, Canada's Minister of State (Foreign Affairs and Consular) issued a statement saying she was "disappointed" to learn that the two men would remain in custody.

?Canada continues to press for a timely and positive resolution to this situation and, in the absence of confirmation of the charges, once again calls for their release," said the release.

?Minister Baird and I have been in close contact with Egyptian officials on multiple occasions, and our embassy in Cairo continues to meet with senior Egyptian government officials regularly on this case. The well-being of Dr. Loubani and Mr. Greyson is our top priority. We continue to receive consular access and are in regular contact with the Canadians? lawyer and families.?
