    Syrian refugees and sexual violence

    Original Text

    ________

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees estimates that there are more than 500 000 Syrian refugees living in Lebanon?that is more than 75 times that of the total number of refugees registered in the first year since the protests began in March, 2011. Furthermore, this number does not include the many refugees who choose not to or are unable to register with the UN refugee agency. Over half are women. Sexual violence against women is often a byproduct of war, but unfortunately it attracts often less attention than seemingly more pressing humanitarian issues such as food and shelter.
