  • conflicting views on 1918 flu and this one

seems to be a lot of differebt views here
some say this is just two sorts of swine flu combined others say its a mix of avian and swine and human
also for 1918 most info states it was from avain flu but Dr Nimian states in the vid that it was purely swine
    anyone know the "facts" here
    maybe Dr Nimian can help
why do most reports on 1918 state it was bird but you say its swine?

even if it was swine ... it had went to swine just a few years before
from birds. I think everyone agrees on that.

So it was an avian virus (in all 8 segments) which maybe was circulating
in swine (or humans) already since some years (less than 10)
I'm interested in expert panflu damage estimates

gs is right on. While it makes for interesting chatter to watch folks debate about what you call these pathogens, the fact is all birds and animals, including humans, are flying and walking around as we speak with evidence of viruses in their bodies. It is more difficult for birds to pass on their viruses to humans directly, but we certainly have seen that in H5N1. It is difficult for swine to pass on their viruses to humans directly, but we clearly have seen that very recently.

The poor swine, on the other hand, readily get viruses from both birds and man, and then serve as a mixing vessel to combine these into unique new subtypes. These new viruses can remain circulating in the swine population for years since many never cause serious illness.

The point is, despite what all the animal and bird lovers will tell you, is that if a human has an up close and personal relationshio with a sick bird or pig, there is some risk of the human getting sick as well. So, any areas where animals routinely live in the house and kids play with animals in the yard, risks of infection from all sorts of pathogens becomes more likely. In areas where sanitary conditions are not ideal in the preparation of poultry and pork for consumption, risks of infection from all sorts of pathogens becomes more likely.

The WHO may go to Alert Phase 6, not because the Swine Flu virus is spreading in the US, Canada and Europe, but because if it gets lose in Indonesia, Katy bar the door.
