Very true. Perhaps that is why the case fatality rate for the 1918 H1N1 in the US was approximately 2.5%, as opposed to the 60% case fatality rate of H5N1.
E627K is mammalian (not a "mutation"). Swine is mammalian.
So, the Qinhai strain of H5N1, with its Lysine (K) at 627 of PB2 is a mammalian, rather than an avian virus? Or has the avian virus recommbined with a mammalian virus and acquired this nasty genetic change?
The above matches shows that this PB1 is in other swine, but it came from a human PB2 from 1993. Thus, it has been in swine for 14 years and really isn't new to swine. It also doesn't indicate this came from anything other than swine. The same is true for PB2 which has been in swine previously, but origially came from North America avian.
The other six gene segments are swine, so there is no doubt that this is a swine H1N1.

Prior to Qinghia strain no avian H5N1 had E627K (but all human isolates had E627K), which is why the presence of E627K in Qinghai H5N1 was such a concern..
innane (and far from scientific) remarks by ProMED and FAO notwithstanding.
Gotta protect the swine industry from unfounded assumptions (like not eating pork) by the public.
Or maybe PETA is exerting an influence similar to WWF on bird flu.

The 2009 swine H1N1 is a 1918 re-run (no avian requird).

Therefore, the Swine Flu virus that we are seeing in California should be less of a threat since it does not have this important genetic change, however acquired?
So it's clearly a human-swine-avian recombinant. Just like they said. And large sections of the genome have been copied faithfully for years and years. The swine part, in particular, is especially stable.
And it has happened pretty recently, as such things go.
If a high southern hemisphere incidence of H1SwN1 participates in a highly-likely dual infection with rampant seasonal H1N1 in the southern hemisphere, won't we likely being changing the plot....fast?

Please forgive my ignorance, but what exactly does this mean. And I want to thank you all for your work.
The Spanish flu of 1918 was a recombinant between swine H1N1 and human H1N1. In 2009 the swine is now in humans and will soon be recombining with human H1N1, so something similar to 1918 may appear in the fall of 2009.
