Frankenviruses!
I don't want even think how many mathematic permutation quantity of mutant viruses will result from this experiments:
"by creating mutations in the H5N1 influenza virus before they evolve naturally"...
"mutations that render H5N1 viruses better able to recognize and enter human cells"...
Obviously, we will be the creators of our destiny...

Scientists seeking to prevent an avian flu pandemic say they have developed a strategy to generate vaccines and therapeutic antibodies by creating mutations in the H5N1 influenza virus before they evolve naturally.
?While nobody knows if and when H5N1 will jump from birds to humans, they have come up with a way to anticipate how that jump might occur and ways to respond to it,? said National Institutes of Health Director Elias A. Zerhouni, MD, in a statement to the journal Science.
For a year, National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Diseases researchers led by Gary Nabel, MD, PhD, have focused on mutations that render H5N1 viruses better able to recognize and enter human cells, and honed in on the protein that directs the virus to bird or human cells.
?Now we can begin, preemptively, to consider the design of potential new vaccines and therapeutic antibodies to treat people who may someday be infected with future emerging avian influenza virus mutants,? institute director Anthony S. Fauci, MD, said in a statement.
