Re: UK: Approximately 24 Deaths and +100 Patients stated to be critically ill (17 deaths confirmed by HPA as for Dec. 16 2010)

    At-risk 'avoid swine flu vaccine'

Young people are at a greater risk from swine flu than the over-60s but are more reluctant to get vaccinated, an expert has warned.

Professor John Oxford, from Queen Mary, University of London, said pensioners would have been exposed to the virus in the 1940s and 1950s.

He explained older people are usually more vulnerable to flu in general but they have a tolerance to the swine flu strain.

Prof Oxford said: "That's the paradoxical thing. There were fewer deaths across those age groups compared to younger people last year. The only thing is, younger people can't be persuaded to have the vaccine."

Asked why fewer young people are getting inoculated, he said: "The problem is that on websites like Twitter people are saying we're all going to die from the vaccine, but that is utter nonsense."

The virologist said people should listen to expert advice, rather than rumours from unqualified sources on the internet.

An estimated 67.2% of over-65s and 41.5% of under-65s in at-risk groups have had the flu jab in England.

At-risk groups from the flu virus include people over 65, those suffering from a chronic heart or chest complaint, people with asthma, chronic kidney disease, diabetes, and those with lowered immunity due to cancer.

Figures out earlier this week revealed 17 people have died from flu so far this winter. The Health Protection Agency (HPA) said 14 deaths were from swine flu and another three from flu type B. All were under 65, with six deaths among children under 18.

At least eight of the 17 were in an "at-risk" group. None was pregnant and none had been vaccinated.

      West Midlands:
SWINE flu has now become the dominant form of influenza in the region, experts claimed last night.
Official figures show a staggering 154 cases have been confirmed in the West Midlands in the last six weeks.
Health bosses claim most people suffering with flu have actually contracted the potentially deadly virus, which has claimed at least 14 lives in the UK this winter.
A West Midlands Health Authority source said: ?When we record flu figures for this year they will reflect the most dominant strain of flu ? and that is swine flu.
      ....
?Rates of flu-like illness within the West Midlands are at levels slightly higher than the national rate,?? he said. ??However, historically the West Midlands has always recorded higher rates and therefore the current situation is within expected seasonal limits.
?Our data shows that confirmed flu activity is increasing and, as expected, influenza H1N1 (swine flu) is the predominant strain, although influenza B is also occurring......

THE family of a pregnant woman suffering from swine flu fear they will have to choose who can be saved - the mother or her unborn baby.

Fallon Devaney, 25, is in a coma after being rushed to hospital.

She is also now fighting pneumonia, but staff believe the baby, due in April, may be sapping her strength.

Yesterday Fallon's mum Linda Fearney, 46, said: "I was taken aside by a doctor and told that either Fallon, the unborn baby, or both of them could die.

"The baby is taking a lot of her strength. The doctors have said they might need to do something about it to save Fallon.

"They can induce the baby but it is unlikely to survive.

"But if Fallon can't fight, then we have a very hard decision to make."

Five people 'critically ill' with swine flu at Coventry University Hospital

FIVE people are seriously ill with swine flu at Coventry?s University Hospital.

Three men and two women are being treated for the deadly virus in the critical care unit at the hospital in Walsgrave.

Last night, a hospital spokeswoman said the patients had existing health problems which made them vulnerable to catching the bug.

She said: ?We can confirm that we are currently treating five patients in our critical care unit for swine flu.

?All patients had underlying illnesses which meant that they were vulnerable to the virus.

?As they are currently receiving treatment we will not be releasing further details about them.?

Swine flu has claimed the lives of 14 people in Britain so far this winter, sparking fears of a repeat of last year?s pandemic.

            Influenza update - 17 December 2010

            (...)

In the United Kingdom, the winter influenza epidemic is under way, particularly across England.

Since mid to late November 2010 there have reports of increasing numbers of community outbreaks of influenza (due to both influenza H1N1 (2009) and B viruses), increasing proportions of sentinel respiratory specimens testing positive for influenza (56% in England during the second week of December; of which 67% were H1N1 (2009) and 33% were influenza B viruses), and increasing numbers of severe influenza cases requiring intensive care.

Swine flu: three more deaths as 200 fight for life

The new deaths would take the total to 20 so far this winter, with the majority linked to the H1N1 swine flu virus. Laboratory tests on the latest deaths in Leicester are awaited.

Dr Philip Monk, communicable diseases consultant for the Health Protection Agency (HPA) in the East Midlands, said: "It is the worst winter outbreak for influenza and viruses for 10 years.

"There are a lot of illnesses out there. Vulnerable people, like young children, are at risk. Unfortunately some of them die."

A health analysis company last night predicted about 200 swine flu victims could be fighting for their lives based on reports by GPs and chemists.

Nationally, flu levels remain normal for this time of year but cases have doubled in a week.

Sixth swine flu patient treated at Coventry University Hospital

ANOTHER patient seriously ill with swine flu has been admitted to Coventry?s University Hospital.

It means a total of six people - a mix of men and women - are currently being treated for the deadly virus in the hospital?s critical care unit.

Doctors there said all the patients had underlying illnesses which meant they were vulnerable to catching the bug.

A hospital spokeswoman added: ?As they are currently receiving treatment we will not be releasing further details about them.?

A nationwide rise in the number of cases has sparked fears of a repeat of last year?s pandemic.

People at a high risk of catching the bug ? including children, pregnant women and those over 65 - are urged to get a free flu jab, which is available through their GP.

The data collected by WHO influenza surveillance network seems to have detected some genetic heterogeneity among H1N1 (2009) virus isolated from hospitalized and fatal cases samples in UK, even though the update did not specify if the mutation are in internal genes - thus affecting virulence - or in surface proteins.

The WHO said however that antigenic characterization of UK H1N1 (2009) virus so far has not demonstrated substantial divergence between circulating strain and the vaccine seeds, suggesting that trivalent seasonal vaccine should stimulate a protective immunity in recipients - or at least reduce the severity of illness.

In England there is a co-circulation of influenza H1N1 (2009) virus along with type B, this latter seen as cause of some of the severe cases detected so far.

For the piece of news, some indicate likely number of intensive care bed occupancy while others suggest the same number as actual.

I suggest that the current situation in UK is worth to be followed carefully but with a degree of skepticism when reading sensationalistic news articles.

                          Swine flu strikes in Sandwell

TWENTY new cases of potentially lethal swine flu have been diagnosed in Sandwell during the latest outbreak of the disease.

Public health officials at Sandwell Primary Care Trust (PCT) have confirmed the number of new or probable cases of the virus in the borough.

Hospital Accident & Emergency departments have also been overwhelmed by patients seeking treatments for flu-like symptoms and infections during the Arctic blast.

The virus is highly infectious and 100,000 flu particles can be projected into the air with just one sneeze.

Dr Patrick Saunders, public health consultant in Sandwell, said: ?As with last year, most patients are experiencing mild illness not requiring hospital admission or any specialist treatment.

?Sandwell is well prepared for the influenza season but it is important that people do everything they can to reduce the incidence and spread of this infection.?

He added: ?Although levels of illness are currently within what we would normally expect for this time of the year, it is important to remind those people eligible for the seasonal flu immunisation to ensure they have their vaccine,? explained the specialist.
