Swine flu: 34 confirmed cases in UK Thursday, 07 May 2009 14:13

Alan Johnson has announced there are now 34 confirmed cases of swine flu in the UK

The health secretary Alan Johnson has announced there are now 34 confirmed cases of swine flu in the UK.

Addressing MPs in the Commons this afternoon, Mr Johnson said one of the new cases was a child at one of the schools currently closed because of the virus.

He said there was not yet evidence of a "sustained" human-to-human transmission in the UK, but ten of those diagnosed with swine flu had not recently travelled to Mexico.

Mr Johnson also warned the number of cases was expected to rise, with the government continuing to stockpile anti-viral drugs which are now available to 80 per cent of the population.

The World Health Organisation claims there have been 31 deaths from swine flu around the world, with 29 in Mexico, where the virus is thought to have originated, and two in the US.
