  • More than a million Spanish were vaccinated against influenza A

More than a million Spanish were vaccinated against influenza A
Most belong to the group immunized people with chronic diseases

Social and who were released by the Minister of Health, Trinidad Jimenez during a dinner conversation at the Club Siglo XXI.

This represents 12% of the more than 10 million vaccines that the government plans to manage risk groups: pregnant women, persons older than 6 months of age, to present a special medical condition, are at high risk of complications resulting from infection with H1N1 pandemic virus, socio-health workers and people working in essential public services. Most belong to the group of vaccinated persons with chronic disease, even though according to Jimenez will have to wait "about six or eight weeks," pending completion of the season to be more reliable, since the autonomous communities offer this delivery through appointment systems.

The minister also stressed that there have been "marked side effects" and that only similar cases have been reported for producing the vaccine for seasonal flu, and flu-like symptoms or redness at the site of puncture.

In this regard, the Ministry of Health reported that data obtained through human pharmacovigilance system (SEFV-H) indicate they have received a total of 150 cases of suspected adverse reactions. The vast majority of suspected adverse reactions are within expectations, the information contained in the technical specifications of vaccines: fatigue and malaise, reactions at the injection site, fever, or fever, muscle and joint aches, dizziness and headaches. All these disorders are usually resolved within a few hours without complications.

Among the cases of suspected adverse reactions of most interest from a clinical standpoint, and thus subject to special monitoring, include others, as three allergic reactions, a case of facial palsy, three cases of seizures and one case of fetal death in a 35 year old woman who was in her first trimester of pregnancy (during this period the rate of spontaneous abortions between 10 and 15%).

The information obtained so far is consistent with the safety profile of licensed vaccines, and suspected adverse reactions reported are within expectations. Indeed, the data obtained so far in Spain are broadly similar to those of other countries that have started their vaccination, "said Health.

    Resistance to Tamiflu
The World Health Organization (WHO) has reported on two recent outbreaks in patients infected with the H1N1 virus resistant to Tamiflu, in particular, Wales (United Kingdom) and North Carolina (USA).

The cases have been reported in patients with severe immunodeficiency and has been suspected transmission of resistant virus from patient to patient, as noted by the agency. The outbreak in Wales was detected in late October in eight patients, but no deaths. The U.S. case was reported in four patients with severe immune deficiencies between mid October and early November. Three of the victims died.

These resistant viruses belonged to the same mutation H275Y, indicating resistance to antiviral component oseltamivir (sold as Tamiflu), although it can be treated with zanamivir, the other drug to combat influenza A.

The WHO said the emergence of viruses resistant to treatment in immunocompromised patients is not unexpected, both seasonal influenza as in A, but points out that research to determine the mode of transmission
