Median age of 24 for 344 hospitalised cases of flu this winter
A child from the West of Ireland died in a Dublin hospital, the HSE has confirmed.
The child became ill and was transferred to the intensive care unit of Our Ladys Hospital in Crumlin where the five-year-old later died.
The virus involved is the The Health Service Executive has confirmed that a child has died from influenza at a Dublin hospital in the last week.
The virus involved is the H1N1 virus which has been circulating in Europe as part of annual flu infections.
Nine flu deaths have been recorded by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre so far this winter.
It said there were 124 confirmed hospitalised cases of flu in the past week, bringing to 344 the total number of hospitalised cases notified in the 2015/2016 flu season .
The HSE said that a small number of children lose their lives each year because of influenza.
For those concerned about contracting a flu-like illness, there are still 500,000 fly jabs available.
The HSE said flu rates continued to rise and were expected to do so for more than or two more weeks.
