Three new suspected cases of swine flu in Bulgaria

    Wed, Jun 03 2009

Three Bulgarian citizens were suspected to be carriers of the H1N1 flu strain and were under constant medical supervision, healthcare officials said on June 3. The patients were from the towns of Smolyan, Blagoevgrad and Plovdiv.

The number of Bulgarian patients infected with swine flu could go further up in the coming days, with the ministry investigating a report that an unknown number of Bulgarians had been travelling with a German national who had been diagnosed with the virus, the head of Bulgaria's healthcare inspectorate, Tencho Tenev, told reporters.

Medical tests on the three patients would be completed within 48 hours, Health Minister Evgeni Zhelev said, as quoted by Dnevnik daily.

The Bulgarian Health Ministry confirmed that the country officially joined the list of countries affected by the swine flu pandemic on June 1. The virus was discovered on a Bulgarian citizen who flew in from New York, via Amsterdam, and arrived in Sofia on May 27.

The person developed respiratory problems, cough and high fever - symptoms of the H1N1 strain - on May 29. He has been hospitalised and is reportedly in a stable condition. Medical tests conducted on his relatives have so far come back negative for the H1N1 strain, the ministry said on June 2.

Suspected Swine Flu Case Reported in Bulgarian Seaside City

A 54 year old man has been hospitalized in the Bulgarian seaside city of Varna with suspicions that he may be infected with H1N1, also known as swine flu, Bulgarian media report Tuesday.

The man had recently been on a trip to Spain
where he spent time with friends who are not reported to be infected. Spain is the European country where cases of the flu first occurred, which is the reason doctors are wary of the case in Varna.

The hospitalized man had shown symptoms of the disease ? muscle aches, temperature of 37 degrees Celsius ? after he came back to Bulgaria and he decided to show up at a hospital himself.

?This is not a confirmed case of swine flu, but we are undertaking extra tests?, the Bulgarian Health care Ministry? chief epidemiologist, Dr. Angel Kunchev, told DeltaNews.

Bulgaria has already confirmed two cases of the H1N1 strain with both infected individuals having recently returned from the USA.
