Romanian Intelligence Report Allegedly Points To Hungary, Slovakia For Bird Flu Sources

    BUCHAREST, May 22

The bird flu outbreaks in Codlea could have started from imports of living turkeys from Hungary and Slovakia, according to sources quoting a report attributed to the Romanian Intelligence Services, or SRI.

Hungary not responsible for bird flu in Romania, says health official

Paris, May 23 (MTI) - Hungary's chief animal health officer has categorically denied allegations that the H5N1 bird flu virus spread to Romanian territories from Hungary or Slovakia, MTI learnt late on Monday.

Miklos Suth, responding to an announcement made by the Romanian intelligence service (SRI) earlier on Monday, expressed his conviction that the deadly virus had not been present in Hungary outside the earlier quarantined animal communities.

SRI claimed in its statement that live birds imported from Hungary and Slovakia brought the deadly H5N1 virus into Romania. It said the virus had been brought into Romania when a poultry farmer had imported 48,000 young turkeys from Hungary.

Suth, who is attending an annual conference of the international epidemiological authority, said that he had met with his Slovak counterpart and discussed Romania's position. He added that Hungary had not received any official communication from the Romanian animal health authority concerning the allegations.

If the Turkeys had been vaccinated, they would be asymptomatic, yet shedding virus.

I don't know if they have - just an explanation of how it MIGHT happen.

And no less valid for that. I'd not thought about vaccinated birds at all before you raised it.

Perhaps a new item in poultry biosecurity might be added: use no poultry products not produced on your own farm.
