Norway's TV2 will be airing a bird flu related documentary/expose Monday night, "Frykten for frykten" (Fear of fear), examining why the Norwegian authorities are not being more open to the public about the possibilites for a severe H5N1 (or other) pandemic. It will also be available to watch online after it is aired Monday night (see link at bottom).
FYI >> the Norwegian authorities' "worst case scenario" if/when an H5N1 pandemic hits Norway is ca. 13,000 deaths -- out of a total population of 4.3 million. Also, H5N1 has not yet been confirmed in Norway, although there have been some suspicious mass bird deaths in the country, for example numerous dead ducks were found in one region of the country back at the beginning of March:
Fant 12 døde fugler på Jæren [Found 12 dead birds (ducks) in Jæren]
Norway tests dead ducks for H5N1 bird flu
Rough translation of documentary description [in original Norwegian below]:
Are we prepared for a new Spanish flu? Or even something worse - an influenza pandemic that will match the Black Death in mortality?
Experts believe that a new pandemic can be worse than the Spanish flu, that took the lives of over 40 million people. The UN has asked all countries to prepare themselves for a global epidemic caused by a deadly virus.
Authorities in many countries are asking their citizens to stockpile food and medicine in case of a pandemic, but Norwegian authorities say we don't have anything to worry about.
Why aren't the Norwegian health authorities informing us about how serious a pandemic could be?
Watch: "Document 2: Fear of fear" on TV2, Monday - May 15, 10:30 p.m.
