  • NORWAY - "We are not scared of deadly infection"

    Here's a rough, partial and prolly poor, translation of an article from a Norwegian paper today. Note that the study they're talking about here was actually conducted in Nov 2005 (hat-tip, Mikala!) -- i.e. before even the outbreak in Turkey....

    We are not scared of deadly infection
    May 8, 2007

    Photo caption: Half of us [Norwegians] think the health authorities(?) over estimate the total death rate, shows a new, Norwegian investigation published in the medical journal BMC public health

    Norwegian and international health authorities, including the WHO, think that we are closer to a dangerous, infectious influeza that will lead to a pandemic ... than we have been in a long time....

    1.4 million doses

    The National People's Health Institute has calculated that if a new influenza pandemic appears(?) in the country, 0.05-1% of the people will die. That means between 23,000 and 46,000 deaths [total pop. ca. 4.6M]. To be on the safe side, the health authorities have stockpiled 1.4 million doses of the flu medicine, Tamiflu....

    No panic

    A new, Norwegian investigation, that is published in the medical journal BMC public health, shows among other things that:

    - Half of us think the health authorities over-estimate the total [possible] deaths;

    - 2% will stay home from work, and 4% say that they will go to an isolated and protected place during such an outbreak;

    - Around half think Tamiflu will reduce the total deaths, but just 1% have purchased/acquired such medicine.
