      Avian flu: update of the epidemiological situation

      Communicated 27.01.2023

      On January 27, 2023, an outbreak of avian flu (H5N1 type virus) was confirmed in poultry kept in Lellingen.

      In order to prevent the spread of this highly pathogenic virus and the appearance of new outbreaks, the Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration reminds owners of poultry and birds to respect the following preventive measures:
      • Feeding and watering must take place in premises that are not accessible to wild birds;
      • Poultry must be kept in closed rooms;
      • Poultry may have access to exit areas provided that these are protected by netting to avoid any contact with wild birds;
      • Biosecurity rules must be scrupulously respected;
      • All gatherings of poultry (poultry exhibitions) are prohibited;
      • Any abnormal poultry mortality should be reported to a veterinarian.
      The Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration insists that all poultry imports must be covered by a health certificate (TRACES) issued by an official veterinarian of the country of origin. This obligation also applies to the purchase of poultry on a market.

      In the event of the discovery of a dead or sick aquatic wild bird (goose, duck, swan), the latter must be reported to the Luxembourg Veterinary and Food Administration (tel.: 247-82539, e-mail: info@alva. state.lu ).

      Depending on the evolution of the disease, the measures will be updated.

      Consumption of eggs and poultry meat poses no risk to public health.
