              Last Friday, 24 new cases of bird flu were detected in Lithuania, the State Food and Veterinary Service reported.

              New cases have been confirmed in seven municipalities: Šiauliai, Klaipėda, Vilnius, Zarasai, Utena districts and Elektrėnai and Marijampole.

              At the beginning of last week, the carcasses of four seagulls and five terns were found in Lake Sarti.

              The highly pathogenic avian influenza A H5N1 subtype virus was detected on Friday in seagull and tern carcass samples tested at the National Institute for Food and Veterinary Risk Assessment, the Department of Fire and Rescue Services said.

              This virus was also detected in the carcasses of five seagulls found in the Kalvii quarry in Klaipėda district.

              Also, last week, four seagull carcasses were found in Šiauliai district, on the shore of Bubiai pond. Research has also identified avian influenza A H5N1 subtype virus.

              The bird flu virus was also detected in the carcasses of two seagulls found on the coast of the Elektrėnai Lagoon and in the same number of seagull carcasses found in the Utena district, on the shore of Lake Alauš.

              Bird flu was also diagnosed in the municipality of Marijampolė, in the territory of the Poezija Park, where the carcass of a seagull was found, as well as the carcass of a stork was found in the village of Galinė, Avižienii, Vilnius district.

              Specialists of the State Food and Veterinary Service marked the places infected with the virus with information signs. In fireplace areas where people are not recommended, feeding wild birds. Local municipalities have also been informed.
