A lot of people remain ignorant about avian influenza, what causes it, and how it is spread, according to the Minister for Health & Children, Mary Harney.
Addressing the 9th World Congress on Environmental Health last week, Ms Harney said that it is important that ?authoritative? information is given to the public.
She said the soon to be set up Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQUA) will be a one stop shop for information about health services and health related issues to the public.
?Hysteria cannot be the tool that gives people information?, she said.
The Minister said legislation to fully set up HIQUA would be published soon.
She added that if ?resource issues? arose, she hoped they can be resolved quickly.
