Highly pathogenic avian influenza: first outbreak detected in a poultry farm in Ille-et-Vilaine

Xavier Remongin/agriculture.gouv.fr
An outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) was detected in Ille-et-Vilaine on 12 August. This is the first outbreak in a farm confirmed in France since last winter's epizootic. Regulated zones have been set up around the affected farm. The HPAI risk remains "negligible" on the national territory.
The first outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) of the 2024-2025 season was detected in a multi-poultry farm in Ille-et-Vilaine (35) on August 12, 2024. This is the first outbreak confirmed in France since January 16.
An epidemiological investigation is underway. The main hypothesis is contamination via wildlife. Indeed, this outbreak is located near an area naturally exposed to contamination via wildlife, while several cases have been observed in seabirds along the Breton coast in recent weeks.
In accordance with health management rules, monitoring and control measures were immediately taken:
The outbreak has been depopulated and will be disinfected immediately;
A protection zone (3 km around the outbreak) and a surveillance zone
(10 km) have been established by the Prefect, in accordance with the regulations. In order to control the risk of spreading the virus, the movement of poultry is prohibited in these areas where strict health measures must be observed, and where surveillance of farms is reinforced.
As a result of this detection, France loses its “ HPAI- free ” status . This status may be regained 28 days after the end of cleaning and disinfection operations and in the absence of new outbreaks.
The level of risk for the disease remains " negligible " , as has been the case since May 3, 2024.
