Landes: 2,700 ducks euthanized after a case of low pathogenic avian influenza

Posted on 19/01/2018 at 17h06. Updated at 17:07 by SudOuest.fr Landes.

The virus was found in a Meilhan farm.

The avian influenza virus has been detected in a farm of 2,700 ducks of the type ready to stuff, in the municipality of Meilhan, it was learned through a press release from the prefecture of Landes.

The analyzes carried out by the national reference laboratory confirmed, Thursday, January 18, the infection of this population of animals with a low pathogenic H5 avian influenza virus.

However, to prevent any spread of the virus, the prefect has euthanized the 2,700 ducks, this Friday morning.

There is nothing at this stage to bring this virus closer to the one that had already been highlighted in December 2017 at a farm in Saint-Jean-de-Lier.

A case of low pathogenic avian influenza virus detected on a duck farm in Meilhan

Article created on 19/01/2018 by the prefecture of Landes Updated on 19/01/2018

The presence of an avian influenza virus was detected in a breeding of 2700 ducks of the ready-to-feed type in Meilhan commune, during the tests conducted as part of the repopulation of this farm. No clinical signs of infection were found in this breeding.

However, the analyzes carried out by the national reference laboratory confirmed the 18 January 2017 infection of this population of animals by a low pathogenic H5 avian influenza virus.

There is nothing at this stage to bring this virus closer to the one that had already been highlighted in December 2017 at a farm in Saint-Jean-de-Lier.

Taking into account the results of these analyzes and in order to avoid any spread of the virus to other farms, the prefect euthanized the 2,700 ducks concerned, in accordance with the sanitary regulations.

This was done this morning under the supervision of the veterinary services of the DDCSPP. A regulated area of one kilometer around the farm has also been set up to decide on a case-by-case basis certain poultry movements in this area.

The Prefect reiterates the importance of the strict application of biosecurity measures in animal production, and in particular at the level of animal husbandry and transport. It also stresses the urgent need to immediately report any suspected clinical suspicion to a veterinarian or government department (DDCSPP).
