    Avian Influenza

In Austria in early November, dead water poultry (herons, tabernacles, etc.) were found in the Lake Constance area.

At first, the suspicion of an AI virus of subtype H5N8 resulted from investigations at the National Reference Laboratory for Avian Influenza at the Institute of Veterinary Medicine of the AGES in Mödling. So far, there is no evidence that domestic poultry would be affected.

BMGF: Bird flu cases on Lake Constance in Vorarlberg proved
The investigations as to whether this is the highly pathogenic variant of H5N8 are not yet concluded. If the test proves that it is the highly pathogenic variant, a highly pathogenic virus type of avian influenza in Austria would have occurred again for the first time since 2006 (2006 was H5N1).
The distinction between highly pathogenic and low-pathogenic AI types is related to the severity of the disease in birds: whereas low-pathogenic AI types cause no or only mild symptoms, highly pathogenic AI types lead to serious pathologies and high mortality rates.

    Press release

BMGF: Bird flu cases on Lake Constance in Vorarlberg proved

    08.11.2016 17:31 - Vienna (BMGF)
In Vorarlberg, pathogens of avian influenza (avian influenza) of subtype H5N8 were detected in five wild birds. The decayed wild birds - mainly heronies - were found throughout the weekend around the Austrian part of Lake Constance. The five wild birds are four herons and one tablet. So far, there is no evidence that the virus stem (H5N8) found is transmitted to humans. ****
The investigations have been carried out by the National Reference Laboratory of AGES (Agency for Health and Food Security). However, they are not yet fully concluded. We are currently analyzing whether the virus is a highly pathogenic or low pathogenic type (strong or low pathogenic). It is only when these results are available - all foreseeable tomorrow, Wednesday, the case - what measures need to be taken.
Zwtl .: Close coordination with authorities in Germany and Switzerland
Since the weekend, more than 100 dead water birds - especially herons - have been discovered around Lake Constance, also in neighboring Germany and Switzerland. Also from Poland, Hungary, Croatia and Schleswig-Holstein were reported this week cases of avian influenza of the subtype H5N8. In Hungary, a turkey farm is affected by avian influenza. The current accumulation of this disease is probably due to the migration of wild birds to the south.
The most important priority now is to prevent the spread of these animal diseases to domestic poultry stocks. For this reason, experts from the BMGF, Vorarlberg and AGES are currently working on the measures to be taken. This can range from setting up a "protection zone" around the shore of the lake to the stabling of domestic poultry (ie exclusive housing). Since Austria's neighbors Germany and Switzerland are also affected, this is done in close coordination with their competent authorities.
Due to the accumulation of confirmed cases in Europe, there is also increased attention outside the currently affected area around Lake Constance. Poultry keepers, in particular close to fresh water, are advised of the hazards and the general hygiene measures are urgently recommended.
As soon as new findings or decisions for measures are available, the Ministry of Health will inform the public again. (Final)

Croatia too, apparently, but I can not find any official Croatian or FAO source on this.

12:33 Bird flu in Western Austria

The variant of avian flu virus of the virus type H5-N8, which is regarded as dangerous, has arrived in Austria: Yesterday the disease was detected in 80 dead wild birds in the Lake Constance region. Today there is the suspicion that domestic poultry in a plant is suffering from bird flu.
