International Mpox/monkeypox outbreak: number of cases and assessment of the situation in Germany

    Status: 6.12.2022

In Germany, cases of Mpox/monkeypox were identified for the first time in May 2022 (for the renaming to Mpox, see the WHO announcement of November 28, 2022 ). As of December 6th, 2022, 3,673 cases from all 16 federal states have been transmitted to the RKI. Since August 2022, the number of cases reported weekly to the RKI has been falling; since mid-October, the number of cases reported has only been in the single digits (no cases were reported at all in one week). So far, no deaths have been registered in Germany. Case numbers by reporting week, country, district, age group and gender can be accessed daily via SurvStat https://survstat.rki.de .

According to current knowledge, close contact is required for transmission of the pathogen. Transmissions in this outbreak have primarily occurred through sexual activity, particularly among men who have sex with other men.

So far, only 19 female cases, four cases in male adolescents and two cases in children under the age of 14 have been reported in Germany.
