    regional administrations/governments in Belgium.
These are 411 cases in Flanders (52%), 285
cases in Brussels (36%) and 93 cases in Wallonia (12%).

The figure below shows the breakdown by region and over time. The last reported case (for
which information is available) reported experiencing symptoms on November 02, 2022.
If the date of onset of symptoms is unknown, the date of diagnosis or notification is
used. The number of new cases has been on a downward trend in recent months
and remains very low, but the situation will continue to be closely monitored.
    ...
Among the cases for which the sex is known (n=786, 99.6%) there are 778 men, 5 women, and 3
people who identify differently. The age of the vast majority of them is between 16
and 71 years old. Two cases have been reported in children under the age of 16; a child under the age of three and
a child over 12 years old.

Symptom information is known for 699 individuals (88.6%). Almost all the
patients (96%) had skin lesions, which were mainly in the anal-genital region (n=450, 64%).

To date, one death has been reported in a person with underlying health conditions.
Based on current data on presumptive transmission (n=582) it appears that the virus is
mainly transmitted through sexual contact (92%).

Among all cases, 152 (19.3%) were able to identify a specific contact with another confirmed case.

Most people for whom information is available (548/682, 80%) had a
idea of where the suspected context where the infection was transmitted. Sexual contact in the
private context were mentioned most often (270/548, 49%). National events or
adult foreigners, during which the persons had sexual contact, were
mentioned by 79 (14%) people. Sex saunas or other places facilitating contact
were identified by 124 men (23%). Participation in a party, in a household, or
other activity without sexual intercourse was reported for 19 people (3.5%). In this last
context, the transmission could have taken place from person to person, by a very close contact, but
non-sexual. While at first the infection was mainly reported through sexual contact
during large events, now most reported cases are linked to contacts
    sex in the private sphere.

It should be noted that the collection and interpretation of this data is limited by the fact that it is

On Thursday morning, a rumour spread in Aalst about a possible case of MPox detected in the city. According to HLN, it seems that the day before yesterday, a general practitioner in the region examined two children with symptoms similar to monkeypox. These children were part of a family that had travelled from Paris to Aalst and had fallen ill after their arrival. The doctor, who did not usually follow this family, then referred them to the hospital.

Aalst Mayor Christoph D'Haese reassures: "We are vigilant, but there is absolutely no reason to panic," he says. "The problem is in no way comparable to that of Covid-19 and a comprehensive security plan has been drawn up based on the experiences of 2022."

Belgium reports first infection with new mpox variant
        Tuesday, 24 December 2024
        By The Brussels Times Newsroom

An infection with the new, more contagious variant of the mpox virus has been reported in Belgium for the first time, according to the European Centre of Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and health institute Sciensano.

The patient in question reportedly had sexual contact with a person who showed symptoms of the virus in Africa. The person then isolated himself before being diagnosed. "Given the measures taken by Belgium, the risk to the general population remains low," the ECDC said.

According to Sciensano, the case involves a patient from Wallonia who was diagnosed with the mpox variant following a specific PCR test. The person did not have high-risk contacts after exposure and went into isolation from the moment he returned to Belgium.

The new variant ('clade I-mpox') was recently found for the first time in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Kenya. Earlier, it also appeared in Germany, Sweden, the United Kingdom, the United States and several Asian countries. Belgium is the eighth non-African country where an infection is detected...
