Spanish Health Services Detect Ticks with Potentially Deadly Infectious Virus
MADRID A Spanish health ministry study on Friday reported the presence of insects infected with a potentially deadly virus in four central regions of the country.
The study confirmed that the Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) virus was present in tiny ticks found in the central regions of Madrid, Extremadura, Castile-La Mancha and Castile and Leon.
Experts said the chances of human infections were slim as all cases of CCHF were found in wild animals that lived far away from humans, and of the 9,500 ticks investigated only 300 were thought to be infected.
In September 2016, a man died after contracting CCHF from a tick while hiking, in what was thought to be the first case of the virus to have been contracted in Spain, though it is widespread in other parts of the world...
