  • Italy - Minks infected with COVID-19 in a farm in Lombardy - Tested positive in august, not reported by authorities - Oct 2020 - Mediareport

After being swabbed in August, at least two mink samples from a farm in Lombardy tested positive for COVID-19 . It is not clear at the moment in which municipality or province the infection occurred, probably Cremona or Brescia.

The complaint comes from LAV , which obtained this information only after numerous and insistent appeals and requests for access to the documents to the Ministry of Health, the Technical Scientific Committee, the Regions and the IZS (of Lombardy and Emilia Romagna). The tests were carried out in August, so the health authorities had already been aware of the fact for months, but have chosen not to report it.

Italy joins a long list of countries where minks have tested positive for COVID-19. The virus has also been detected in various farms in the Netherlands, Denmark, Spain, and the United States . Thousands of animals were killed for purportedly preventative purposes.

COVID AND MINK: OUTBREAK IN MINK BREEDING IN ITALY ALREADY IN AUGUST

Positive to SARS-CoV-2 at least 2 samples - taken in August - from mink from a single farm: this was revealed by LAV, which obtained this information only after numerous and insistent appeals and requests for access to the documents to the Ministry of Health, to the Scientific Technical Committee, to the Regions and to the IZS (of Lombardy and Emilia Romagna), finally discovering the results of molecular tests only in these hours.

Serious and irresponsible silence and inertia of the Health Authorities for not having given news of mink infected with SARS-CoV-2 on the farm and discovered already in August. Instead of starting a rigorous screening with diagnostic tests in all mink farms in Italy, even after full-blown positive cases, the Ministry of Health (and the Regions) continued to limit themselves to clinical observation even knowing that mink, like people, they can be asymptomatic.
