Yellow Fever Virus (YFV) in Brazil: data for EW 18/04 May per MOH/ data for EW 1-18 per EW
3140 notified YFV cases with 663 suspected, 729 confirmed, and 1748 discarded cases; 410 notified YFV associated fatalities with 45 suspected, 249 confirmed, and 116 discarded fatalities due to YFV infection reported nationwide as of EW 18/04 May by Brazilian MOH. Mortality rate is 34.15% and thus constant.
Most cases are reported from the Southeastern region which includes the states of Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Espirito Santo, and Minas Gerais, with the epicentre in Minas Gerais.
Taking into account data provided in the past weeks, the number of suspected cases increased in the past weeks (with a decrease the previous weeks) concomitant with an increase in discarded and confirmed cases, indicating that testing of suspected cases is under way and able to verify the diagnosis of suspected cases. The increase in suspected and confirmed cases however also indicates continued spread and vaccination efforts need to increase.
