Health officials report 3rd human West Nile case in Miss.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - A human case of the West Nile Virus has been reported in Forrest County, the third case of the mosquito-born disease reported by state health officials this year.

The Mississippi State Health Department said earlier cases were reported in Lincoln and Madison counties.

MSDH conducts statewide mosquito testing with its most intensive surveillance during peak mosquito reproduction time - usually July, August and September.

Symptoms may include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, a rash, muscle weakness or swollen lymph nodes.

Infection can cause encephalitis or meningitis in a small number of people. Those illnesses can lead to paralysis, coma and possibly death.

A human case of the West Nile virus has been confirmed in Jones County, the fifth case of the mosquito-borne disease reported by the Mississippi State Health Department this year.

Previously confirmed cases were in Lincoln, Forrest and Madison counties.

Symptoms may include fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, a rash, muscle weakness or swollen lymph nodes.

Infection can cause encephalitis or meningitis in a small number of people. Those illnesses can lead to paralysis, coma and possibly death.

7 new West Nile Virus cases reported

The Mississippi State Department of Health reports seven new human cases of West Nile Virus, bringing the state?s total number of West Nile Virus cases to 93 with three deaths for 2008.

The new cases are in Hinds, Jones, Leake, Leflore, Lincoln and Madison counties. The agency also reports one new case of LaCrosse Encephalitis in Madison County. The Health Department reports both confirmed and probable cases to the public.

Since March 2008, West Nile virus cases have been reported in Calhoun, Clarke, Forrest (4), George (2), Grenada, Harrison (2), Hinds (21), Jasper (3), Jones (14), Lamar (2), Lawrence, Leake (3), Leflore (3), Lincoln (3), Madison (7), Marion (3), Monroe (2), Neshoba (7), Panola, Pearl River, Rankin (3), Scott (4), Simpson, Sunflower, Washington and Wayne counties. Deaths have been reported in Forrest, Hinds and Leflore counties. Six cases of LaCrosse Encephalitis have been reported in Adams, Amite, Harrison, Hinds, Madison and Yazoo counties. Six cases of Eastern Equine Encephalitis and two cases of West Nile virus have been reported in horses.
