  • Misleading Newspaper Headlines

    One of my pet peeves is when newspapers and other media report cases of WNV without clarifying whether it is found in humans or some other source such as mosquitos, birds, cows etc. Here is a typical headline:

    Three States Already Report First Cases of West Nile Virus This Year

    This newspaper could have just as easily entitled the article:

    Three States Already Report First Non_Human Cases of West Nile Virus This Year

    I suppose the first headline is more of an attention grabber.

    they have special people for headlines.

    Someone writes the article, then the headline specialist,
    who doesn't know about the topic of the article,
    adds the headline, so to attract attention
