Columbus' first human case of West Nile Virus in 2025 was reported the week of Aug. 4, according to Columbus Health Commissioner Mysheika Roberts.

The first infection comes as Columbus and Ohio face a surge of mosquitoes positive for West Nile Virus that exceeds typical expectations for this time of year. The virus levels occurring now usually are not seen until late August or early September, according to Roberts.

She attributes the.. increase in the virus' activity to Columbus' rainy spring and summer, which created the standing water and moist air that mosquitoes prefer...

...Outside of Columbus, there has been one other human case of West Nile Virus reported in Fulton County in northwest Ohio, according to the Ohio Department of Health.
