West Nile, 718 confirmed cases and 49 victims in Italy

Among the 718 confirmed cases, 341 occurred in the neuro-invasive form, the most severe, with a lethality of 14.4% calculated on these forms, a slight decrease compared to the 20% detected in 2018 and substantially stable compared to 2024. The spread of the virus now affects 75 provinces in 17 Italian regions, including Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto, Lazio, Campania and Sardinia. In particular, the regions with the highest number of neuro-invasive cases are Lazio (84), Campania (79) and Lombardy (51). The 49 deaths are concentrated mainly in Lazio (18), Campania (14) and Piedmont (7).
In addition to neuro-invasive forms, there are also 57 asymptomatic cases identified among blood donors and 309 cases with febrile symptoms. Among the latter, three are cases imported from foreign countries such as Kenya, Egypt and the Maldives. At the same time, 10 cases of infection with Usutu virus, another mosquito-borne arbovirus, were reported, mainly distributed between Piedmont, Lombardy, Veneto and Lazio.
