Kasaï: confirmation of the typhoid epidemic in the health zone of Kalonda, more than 385 cases recorded in 1 month

    23.10.2021,
    HEALTH
    -
More than 385 cases of typhoid fever and 2 suspected cases of measles have been recorded in the health zone of Kalonda in Kasai province.

According to the Kalonda health zone chief doctor who delivers these figures, this situation dates back to the second half of September until October 20 of the current year.

Insufficient drinking water would be the cause of the increase in cases of this disease of dirty hands recorded in this part of the country which suffered from the pollution of the waters of the Tshikapa and Kasai rivers last August, explained Dr. Flory. Ngotota, chief medical officer of the health zone in Kalonda.

"We are confronted with a situation linked to the environmental disaster experienced by the city of Tshikapa. The health zone of Kalonda, crossed largely by the Kasai river, has already recorded 385 cases of typhoid fever and 2 suspected cases of measles including both samples have been taken. We fear the worst will happen if nothing is done at Regideso, "he said.

He insists on the fact that the shortage of drinking water in this corner not supplied by Regideso is also at the origin of the epidemic and calls on the population to apply strict hygiene measures to avoid contamination.

Note that it is more the peripheral health areas located in the municipality of Mbumba and Mabondo that register many more cases.

Kongo-Central: resurgence of typhoid fever in the Kisantu health zone

    Published on Thu, 18/11/2021 - 10:28 | Last modified on Thu, 18/11/2021 - 10:28

"Typhoid fever" has resurfaced in a few towns in the Kisantu health zone, in Madimba territory, in Kongo-Central.

This outbreak of typhoid fever observed in the health zone of Kisantu affects more the health areas of Nkandu, Kikonka, Kintanu 2, Kavuaya as well as that of Ngeba. So far, more than ten cases have been detected there thanks to an activity that the health zone of Kisantu is carrying out jointly with the National Institute of Biomedical Research (INRB), within the framework of disease surveillance, affirms , the head of the Kisantu health zone, Dr José Mavuna.

The chief doctor of this health zone who confirms the information indicates that this disease often appears in this region during the rainy season because of "poor management of latrines".

To curb this disease of dirty hands which, fortunately, has not claimed victims so far, the Kisantu zone chief doctor invites the local community to strengthen hygiene measures and to consume hot food.

The major symptom of typhoid fever is “fever and abdominal colic”. They can, if not careful, lead to "intestinal perforation," said Dr José Mavuna.

He asks patients to go as quickly as possible to a medical structure to be taken care of.

Kwango: 1,458 cases of typhoid fever recorded in Popo Kabaka since the beginning of 2022

        Tuesday, February 22, 2022 - 2:33 p.m.

The health zone of Popo Kabaka, located in the province of Kwango, is recording more and more cases of typhoid fever. Since January of the current year, a total of 1,458 cases have been recorded in this region. This fever has affected almost all age groups, says the epidemiologist doctor of the Kwango provincial health division, Dr. François Mwakisenda.

“From the first week until now, there has been an outbreak of typhoid fever in Popo Kabaka health zone. From the first epidemiological week to the sixth week, the health zone notified 1,458 cases of typhoid fever. The majority of patients present with fever. They also registered some patients with complications, those who come with intestinal perforation. All age groups are concerned,” says Dr. François Mwakisenda.

Moreover, he makes it known that the difficulties are enormous.

“Last year, the area had also experienced the outbreak but after there was the intervention of doctors without borders, they had brought some care kits. But after that, so far no partner has come forward to support the area. There isn't much for support. The area is doing its best to raise awareness among the population”.
