OMAHA, Neb. —

The Douglas County Health Department has confirmed an active case of tuberculosis disease at a local YMCA.

The health department is looking into over 500 possible exposures that may have happened at the Westview YMCA's drop-in daycare, located near 156th Street and Summit Plaza.

The possible exposures would have happened between late spring and late October, and DCHD will continue to investigate the patient's whereabouts while they were contagious to figure out more potential exposures.

DCHD will notify parents of any children who have had close contact with the patient as well as anyone else who may have been exposed...

Tuberculosis testing for hundreds of children in Omaha began Saturday, after a large group of infants, toddlers and children was potentially exposed to infection through a drop-in day-care program.

More than 500 children need to be tested within the next week, local health officials said, and younger ones will be given preventive drugs. It’s an unusually large tuberculosis exposure of children, who are more vulnerable to the disease and can become very sick quickly.

“This is an urgent situation,” Justin Frederick, deputy health director in Douglas County, Neb., told reporters this week. The health department was preparing to declare a public health emergency...

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - The Douglas County Health Department officially declared a public health emergency Monday, days after alerting the Omaha-metro to hundreds of potential tuberculosis exposures via a YMCA child care service.

Monday’s declaration notes that more than 550 people were identified as potentially exposed to TB at the Westview YMCA Childwatch, a short-term care service for children while their parents work out at the facility, between May and October. Last week, parents were notified by email about the potential exposure at DCHD officials hinted then that a public health emergency declaration was imminent.

DCHD said Thursday that one case of TB had been confirmed and that officials were working to determine whether any of the hundreds of other potential exposures had resulted in additional cases...
