News / Togo/Case of deadly rabies: the Plateaux region on alert

    June 24, 2025

Cases of suspected and confirmed rabies dog bites have recently been reported in several prefectures of the Plateaux region, unfortunately causing loss of human life. The announcement was made this Monday, June 23, by Governor Dadja Maganawé, causing great concern among the population.

The affected prefectures are numerous: Kpélé, Amou, Est-Mono, Moyen-Mono, Ogou, Akébou, Anié and Wawa. Rabies, this viral disease fatal once symptoms appear, strikes indiscriminately and can be transmitted to humans through bites, scratches or simple licks from an infected animal.

Faced with this worrying resurgence, the authorities have taken firm measures to contain the spread of the virus. These include: mandatory annual vaccination of all pets (dogs, cats, monkeys); systematic caging or chaining of animals to prevent them from wandering; and strict veterinary observation of any animal that has bitten a person.

Furthermore, health services recommend that anyone who has been bitten immediately wash the wound with running water and soap and then go to a health center without delay.

The governor calls on the population to be vigilant and take collective responsibility to stem the threat.

"Rabies kills, but it can be prevented. It is urgent to vaccinate your animals and avoid contact with those that roam freely," he said.

The Plateaux region is on alert. Everyone's mobilization is now essential to stop this deadly wave.
