Seventh child found infected with poliovirus in North Waziristan
Ikram Junaidi Published June 2, 2022 - Updated about 9 hours ago

ISLAMABAD: Another child was found infected with poliovirus in North Waziristan, taking the tally of patients reported in the tribal district to seven in just over a month.

All cases have been reported from this southern district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and more are expected from the same area due to high refusal rate and instances of finger-marking without vaccination during campaigns.

With the emergence of the latest case, the global count of wild polio in 2022 has reached eight, with only one case being reported from Afghanistan in January. This means that 87pc of the global cases have been reported from Pakistan.

The latest victim is a seven-month-old girl who has been paralysed by wild polio...

Pakistan's fight against polio threatened by extremist violence, anti-vaccine sentiments
10 confirmed cases of polio confirmed this year, leaving some children paralyzed
CBC Radio · Posted: Jun 21, 2022 1:29 PM ET | Last Updated: 3 hours ago

As frontline workers in Pakistan continue to treat those affected by a surge in polio cases, Dr. Shahzad Baig, who leads Pakistan's Polio Eradication Programme, said he and his colleagues are also dealing with death threats from religious extremists and people with anti-vaccine sentiments.

"Every team is escorted by security, by law enforcement agencies, either police [or] army," he told The Current guest host Duncan McCue.

"And I want to bring it on notice that, so far, the polio program has lost 50 lives in the line of duty" to extremist bombings and shootings, he said.

It's unfortunate news at a time when Pakistan needs all medical hands on deck. After 15 months without a single case of polio, the country has reported 10 new cases since April.

Baig said children make up the majority of the cases, and the affected children were reportedly partially or fully paralyzed.

              An element of fear

Baig said there are a number of reasons why polio immunization numbers are low in North Waziristan District, where the majority of this year's polio cases were reported, and surrounding areas...

Ikram Junaidi Published July 23, 2022 - Updated about 6 hours ago

ISLAMABAD: As Pakistan strives to become polio-free, the region of southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa threatens to upend the progress, with this year’s 13th case reported on Friday.

An 18-month-old child was paralysed by wild poliovirus (WPV) in Lakki Marwat, the National Institute of Health confirmed.

The 12 other cases were also reported from southern KP, North Waziristan. With Pakistan nearly achieving the status of a polio-free country, health authorities have expressed concern over the high number of cases from the tribal districts.

“We have successfully managed to prevent the virus from spreading elsewhere despite the frequent movement of people between KP and other parts of the country. If we can contain and eliminate the virus from this area, we can win the fight against polio,” federal Health Secretary Dr Fakhre Alam Irfan told Dawn...

Health officials report detection of Wild Polio Virus 1 in Sialkot sewage
                        By M. Waqar Bhatti
                        August 19, 2022

ISLAMABAD: Following the detection of Wild Polio Virus 1 in the environmental samples of eight cities of Pakistan, now WPV1 has been detected in the sewage of the industrial city of Sialkot, officials in the National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination (NHS,R&C) confirmed to The News on Thursday, fearing that it could further lead to spreading of poliovirus in the country.

“Today, Wild Polio Virus 1 has been detected in the sewage of Sialkot city of Punjab, indicating that the virus is rapidly spreading in different cities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab. So far, Wild Polio Virus 1 has been detected in the environmental samples of 9 cities of the country including the capital Islamabad”, an official in the federal capital told The News.

Pakistan has so far reported 14 polio cases in 2022 with 13 cases from North Waziristan alone but experts fear with the detection of poliovirus from the sewage in nine major cities of KP, Punjab and the capital, it is only a matter of time that poliovirus can start crippling children in the densely populated cities of the country. “Last month, Wild Polio Virus was detected in the sewage of Peshawar, Bannu, Nowshera and Swat in Khyber Paktunkhwa, capital Islamabad as well as Rawalpindi and Lahore in Punjab”, the official, who is not authorized to talk to media, said. In August alone, he said, Wild Polio Virus 1 has been detected in the environmental samples of Rawalpindi, Bahawalpur and now in Sialkot, the official said, adding that results of various cities of Sindh, Balochistan and other parts of the country are being awaited.

When asked as to why poliovirus has not yet been detected in Sindh and Balochistan, especially in Karachi, the official said due to heavy monsoon rains, sewage gets diluted so the chances of detection of poliovirus in the sewage become very rare. “Samples from the sewage of a particular area collected before 10 in the morning. But if it is raining heavily like in the case of Karachi, other cities of Sindh and Balochistan, detection of poliovirus in the sewage samples becomes very difficult as it gets diluted”, the official added.

Terming the presence of Wild Polio Virus 1 in the sewage samples of nine major cities of Pakistan, the official said it indicates that the virus has spread to the entire Pakistan from North Waziristan and feared that it could lead to serious consequences for the country...
