  • Peru: Circulating vaccine-derived polio virus (cVDPV) outbreak

I believe the implication here is that these children were themselves vaccinated shortly before paralysis, not that vaccine-derived virus is circulating. But four of these cases in a short time is slightly unusual...

Government denies outbreak of polio in Peru

August 29, 2011, 22:35 Lima, Aug 29 (Prensa Latina) The Health Ministry today denied a polio outbreak in Peru and said that only four cases have been caused by something exceptional in the vaccine that they were inoculated.

The Director General of Health of the People of the agency, Carlos Acosta, have said that small flaccid paralysis after being vaccinated against this evil and his case related to problems in their immune system.

He stressed that the disease is controlled and eradicated since 1991 and the four children are properly identified and tracked

"We are not against any outbreak of polio. It is true that polio is returning, the disease is properly controlled and the cases presented correspond to exceptional cases caused by the modified virus is inoculated with the vaccine," he explained.

He added that minor patients have a severe impairment in their immune system by a congenital problem, which caused the attenuated vaccine virus to change its shape and become one that caused the disease.

"That's why you should always carry vaccinate children in good health," he said Acosta, in time to ensure that the state health system will pay for the care and rehabilitation of small infected. He said that people should continue vaccinating children and in this case the problem was that children were not in good health.

Re: Peru: Government denies polio outbreak, claims four vaccine-derived paralytic cases

There are a lot of errors in this article (the vaccine against wild virus does protect against vaccine strains, type 2 is not a mutation of type 1, etc.), but it contains the observation that these are apparently type 2 vaccine-derived cases.

There may be an issue with a univalent type 1 vaccine being used, which would not be effective against any type 2 virus, though.

There is no vaccine against polio virus mutation
Since 1991, there was no record of this bad in the country. They warn that the risk of a flare for the low vaccination coverage

The cases of four children infected with polio have stunned the medical community, and that since 1991 there was no record of people affected with the disease in the country. These are children of children between 9 months and 3 years were vaccinated at centers of the Ministry of Health (MoH) of San Martín de Porres, the Augustine, San Juan de Miraflores and Villa El Salvador.

So far, we have confirmed that one of the children acquired polio type 2, a mutated virus type 1.

An Ombudsman's Report of June 23, 2011 warned the mutation of the virus in stool samples from the baby of the family Diaz Hoyos, after being analyzed by a laboratory in Brazil.

The report warns that would risk an outbreak occurs at the low polio vaccination coverage of the MoH.

Former Health Minister Oscar Ugarte confirmed that this case is a mutation of the vaccine produced a strange reaction.

Zaidman Max Renowned pediatrician recalled that the only vaccine that exists in Peru is polio type 1 and stressed that this does not immunize against polio type 2.

It was confirmed that two other classic children acquired polio after vaccination. The parents mentioned that their babies were vaccinated with drops in the mouth (oral).

Ugarte said there are only three confirmed cases. However, according to Health Forum, a child of 3 years would be affected quarter.

Health Forum demanded compensation, care and rehabilitation for the lifetime of the 4 children. Mario Rios, National Coordinator for Health Forum, demanded an audit of the polio vaccine coverage, since, according to the Ombudsman, only at 60% of the country when they should exceed 95%.

    DISCARD MINSA OUTBREAK
Carlos Acosta, director of the Directorate General of Health of the People (DGSP), explained that the infection was because the children had low defenses at the time of vaccination. "That's why you should always carry vaccinate children in good health," he said.

He also ruled that there is an outbreak of polio in the country and said that children with acute flaccid paralysis are exceptional cases.

To avoid this problem, Dr. Zaidman recommended that parents apply the hexavalent vaccine (injection) to their children instead of the mouth.

"The ministry for economic reasons the vaccine orally, which has no absolute efficiency, it can have consequences in children with low defenses. However, such cases are rare, "he said. There are two forms of the vaccine against polio. One is through the hexavalent vaccine (polio, triple diphtheria, tetanus, whooping cough, hepatitis B and meningitis).

This is given by injection. And the other is pentavalent, a shot against 5 diseases and an application orally (drops) for polio.

"We did not get to 70%, 75% of the vaccines when a company should be adequately protected in 95% of the shares of vaccines.
