The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

Following the earlier announcement on four male residents in the Developmental Disabilities Unit (DDU) of Caritas Medical Centre (CMC) confirmed with parainfluenza infection, the hospital announced the following updates today (November 16):

There is one more 12-year-old boy of the concerned unit presenting with fever and the test result is positive to parainfluenza.

The concerned resident is being treated under isolation and in stable condition.

Infection control measures have been stepped up in DDU.

New admission is suspended while visiting arrangements remain unchanged.

All other child residents are under close surveillance.

The hospital has reported these cases to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre of Health Protection.

There are two more residents, a nine-year-old boy and a 14-year-old girl of the concerned unit presenting with fever symptom and their test results are positive to parainfluenza.

They are being treated under isolation and their condition is stable.

Infection control measures have been stepped up in DDU.

New admissions are suspended while visiting arrangements remain unchanged.

All other child residents are under close surveillance.

The hospital has reported these cases to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection.

Hong Kong: Parainfluenza outbreak in school under close watch (12/4/09)

The Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Department of Health today (December 4) urged members of the public and management of institutions to take preventive measures against influenza-like illness (ILI) by strictly observing rules about environmental and personal hygiene.

The appeal was made following CHP's investigation into a report of parainfluenza outbreak in a school in Tuen Mun, affecting 14 students and six staff members.

The affected group comprised 13 males and seven females, aged between 7 and 36. They developed ILI symptoms including fever, cough, runny nose and sore throat between November 22 and today. All the affected are in stable condition.

The investigation continues.

The nasopharyngeal aspirate specimen taken from an affected student was tested positive for parainfluenza virus.

CHP officials have conducted a field visit to the school and provided health advice to the staff.

To prevent respiratory tract infection, people are advised to adopt the following measures:

• Build up good body immunity by having a proper diet, regular exercise and adequate rest, reducing stress and avoiding smoking;
• Maintain good personal and environmental hygiene;
• Wash hands after sneezing or coughing, and wear a mask when having symptoms of respiratory tract infection;
• Maintain good ventilation; and
• Avoid visiting crowded places with poor ventilation.

Members of the public, particularly children, elderly people and those with chronic diseases, should wear face masks and consult doctors promptly if they develop symptoms of respiratory tract infection.
