Confirmed cases of botulism: withdrawal and recall of several tortillas produced by Palacios (Spain) and sold in supermarkets throughout the country

    Press release
    September 29, 2025

Health authorities have been informed of two confirmed cases of botulism in Brittany, following the consumption of tortillas produced in Spain by a factory belonging to the PALACIOS group. Analyses by the National Reference Center (NRC) for Botulism at the Pasteur Institute have confirmed the presence of the bacteria in the remains of the tortilla consumed by one of the cases.

The results of the investigations were shared by the General Directorate for Food (DGAL) with the Spanish authorities in order to identify all the tortilla references likely to be affected. These elements led PALACIOS to transmit the references of the following products with a view to their withdrawal and recall by the brands concerned, for all batches and all best before dates (BBD) currently on the market:

Tortillas sold in stores of the INTERMARCHE and NETTO groups, under the brand "Itinéraire de nos saveurs":
    1. Onion tortilla 500g (Consumer Recall sheet 2025-09-0270 )
Tortillas sold in CARREFOUR group stores, without brand:
    1. Fresh tortilla with onions 500g, and fresh plain tortilla 500g (Consumer Recall sheet 2025-09-0283 )
Other tortilla references from the PALACIOS group are not affected by this withdrawal and recall operation. Given the incubation period (from a few hours to a few days) and the potentially serious nature of the disease, people who have consumed these products are urged to be extremely vigilant and to consult a doctor in the event of symptoms (vision problems, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth, difficulty speaking), mentioning this alert. People who still have these products are urged not to consume them, not to open them, and to throw them away.

    What is botulism?

Botulism is a rare but potentially serious neurological condition caused by a toxin produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This toxin requires an oxygen-free environment to thrive, which is why botulism is primarily linked to canned goods (home-made or homemade) and vacuum-packed products with poorly controlled preservation processes.

The disease generally appears 12 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food and causes symptoms of varying severity: early digestive signs that may be fleeting (abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea), ocular damage (impaired accommodation, blurred vision), neurological symptoms responsible for a risk of choking, dry mouth accompanied by impaired swallowing or even speech, more or less severe paralysis of the muscles.

Treatment of botulism is primarily symptomatic and, in severe cases, requires intensive respiratory care with assisted ventilation. Administering botulinum antitoxin within hours or days of the onset of symptoms can shorten hospitalization time.

The vast majority of patients treated without delay recover without after-effects, but the duration of treatment and convalescence can last several months.
